Yea ... I thought the metal shavings was a bit of a stretch .... but the remainder rings pretty true.  I have a set of the nylon gears and they are A-OK ... Waltons for $10

If metal gears are shedding shavings or locking up, then they're not designed and machined properly, It's not the fault of the metal.
I've never heard a single complaint such as that.
I think that they're making up some imaginary problems that don't exist just to justify their plastic gears.

Ah ... there you go with "plastic" ... they are not plastic.

The Northern Tool, Grizzly and others that come with non-metal gears are in fact a brittle hard plastic and they break quite easily if there is the slightest flaw, which most will have.  The length of the crank arm can put quite a force on the little shaft and the right amount will make it fail ... mine did.

However, the gear set from Walton's looks to be a nylon material like Delrin and actually won't fail as easily as a metal gear.  In fact, I am not sure you can break it at all.

I personally think the metal gear business is hype and for an extra $10 the problem is easily solved making the customer $50 ahead of the game when compared to the LEM.

I could also be totally wrong too!

Rexlan,
I'm confused.
You posted information about SausageMaker's plastic gears (Lubricomp and Nylon are both plastics) yet you say that you ordered gears from Walton's.
How does this all fit together?

I believe that the gears on the Grizzly may also be nylon!?

What stuffer do you have?

@Martin ........  Semantics I suppose - I have a Grizzly ($80) and those original gears (and the warranty replacements) are a hard brittle plastic.   Broke them (the shaft broke in half) and I ordered a set from Walton's for $9.95.  Those are a nylon "type" material and I do not think I can break them (reasonably).  I have only seen the SM gears in the picture but did not need to give them $25 for the $10 set of gears ...

I posted the other information as a FYI .... it was not MY information and it may be total BS ... I found it on another forum and thought it to be of interest.  Seems you folks know more about it than meets the eye ....

I also understand that no meat grinders are made in the USA today (including LEM - gasp) and several have changed from the "metal gear" hysteria and gone to a Delrin gear instead.  The results seem to say that these gears seldom fail like the metal gears do, run much smother and a lot quieter, not than noise is an issue.  Your mileage may vary however.

So all, this discussion on the gears and I did not even get a nod (other than Joe) about my mixing question ... suspicious  .... maybe a conspiracy .... shameful.

@fpnmf ... I stand corrected and made an overly broad statement with a flawed assumption.  My apologies.

I will make sure everything works great!  Thanks Martin!
