It's been a very long time since I've posted anything here. Between my job, life etc time has gotten away. Since I started smoking I've been using a stick burner and absolutely loved the results. Recently my wife and I decided to sell our home and live full time in the RV. There simply isn't a way to drag a stick burner along not to mention wood. I decided to purchase the Green Mountain Grill (Davy Crocket) pellet cooker. I thought I'd pass along some thoughts on it. The GMG is perfect for an RV'er as it folds up and fits into the basements or back of a truck.
First after cooking my favorites on it I don't believe I get as much smoke flavor from pellets as you do from burning real wood. As much as I wanted it to be as good as a stick burner its not. Its not bad and you can do some good Q but I still think its better with wood.
As for the grill itself you simply cannot beat the convenience of a pellet cooker. Keep the hopper full and it will maintain temps. I have gotten to the point where I trust it so much I can leave the MotorHome completely for a while and come back knowing all is cooking well. This grill came with a WiFi version that as far as I'm concerned wasn't worth the money. Maybe it's the campgrounds WiFi, or simply the unit itself but it rarely works as directed. Recently they did come out with an upgrade but I haven't bothered to download it.
Like many grills the internal thermometer is not all that accurate. I use the new ThermoWorks "Smoke" to monitor the temps. I will give Green Mountain Grill company this, there customer service is excellent. When I told them about the problems they did send me a new thermometer and sending unit. I haven't installed them yet as I really like the ThermoWorks Smoke thermometer.
As long as we are living full time in an RV this is a great way to go. When we do decide to get a home and settle in, I'll be shopping for a stick burner.
