Square Body Reverse Flow Build

Hi All,

Havent been on so much lately, jus been cookin.  I want to make the above smoker, or something similar, out of this here metal I was given the other day.  I was wondering what your input might be.  I think the bigger stuff is 18".  I also think its all 3/16". I am thinking a 4' main chamber with another 4' vertical chamber to house the firebox and sausage chamber/jerky/warming chamber/just cuz its cool spot.  If I wanted to I suppose I could even go and make it insulated, as there seems to be some 16" in the pile as well.  I wonder how much it would weigh though.  First order of business is to replace my much modified Chargriller Duo, then move on to a trailer version for charity fundraisers for the kids and whatnot.  What are your thoughts?  Thanks for being here, by the way.  You guys are great.

Hi FlipHyzer,  One thought that comes to mind would be to turn your cook chamber 45 degrees. That would give you a larger cooking service. Also would set the cooking grill 2-3 inches below center or what ever you think works best. It would just give you some more room for great Q.

ok 18" square tube here is what i guess for weight 4 sides of 18" x 12" long= 6 square foot per running foot of tube. 3/16 plate is 7.65# per squage foot. so 6x7.65=45.9# per running foot. you are going to have 2 18"x4' tubes, which is 8 running foot =183.6# now you are going to have 3  3/16" end caps, so 6.75 sq.'x 7.65# = 51.64# . now your reverse flow plate is going to be about 18" wide 18" to go across the fire box. lets say it runs the full length of the cook chamber. (i know that won't work but that gives me a number to work with. you will just subtract 7.65# for every sq" you cut out to make the opening) so 48" + 18" = 8.25 sq' of plate x 7.65 = 63.11# .

now i don't know the size of the stack or the grate. what you are going to use for hinges , handles, dampers, strap to seal around doors. or amount of welding rod.

so here is what we have so far.

total 18" tube is   183.6#

end plates             51.64#

reverse flow plate   63.11#  minus what you cut out for reverse  flow

                       _________

                         298.35# 

this should give you an idea of that the finished smoker will weigh.

Maple, as for flipping it diagonally, i am considering putting in two rows of racking if possible to double my surface area.  Also i want to hang the doors so they open sideways.  i dont think i could do either of these easily if i angled it.  i am eventually trying to get near a version of this old country bbq.

18" is small. doesn't matter what "she" says. i didn.t do the math for her. ok that said. if you are working with what you have. and 18" is all you have work with it or..........cut it and double it. so about 35" not square. size matters. but you can make great Q with anyting that will make heat and smoke.

You are right, 18" is small.  But 18" square is different than 18" round in my thinking.  Not sure, will have to ask her girlfriend what she said.

I still think 18" is small.  I could prolly recycle it into something bigger.  Not sure what the street value is of all that.  Hell I could prolly recycle it all and just by myself a Klose outright.

Still in the thinking stages, although I did find a decent welder to work with the other day.

But yeah cut and double, or not, just layer.  A double reverse flow anyone?

Awesome score!  I've been looking for some 12" material like that to use as fireboxes on two patio RF's that I'm planning.
