no it's a waste of time,there's a post on here somewhere that gives a basic
scientific equation of how the wood will not absorb the water.

I don't soak, I cover my 9x9 pan with aluminum foil an after the smoke starts ta slow down, pull the foil off. Don't have any flareups thata way.
 
i have always soaked my chunks with no ill effects..i guess it's just whatever teases your monkey
 
I dont soak. And I dont understand all this talk about flareup. In my chargriller, my goal is to maintain a small clean burning fire. Notice the words "burning fire". Not smoldering, clean burning. How ya gonna do that with wet wood? Sometimes I dont even see smoke but man can I taste it!
