Smoking grass-fed beef.

We raise grass fed beef and would like to smoke it for the upcoming American Royal BBQ competition in Kansas City, MO. 

I understand grass-fed beef is not good for BBQ. 

Has anyone had success with grass-fed beef BBQ? I appreciate any tips you may have.

I honestly don't think I've ever tried smoking grass fed beef personally. Welcome to SMF

If I remember my cowboy movies,they use to move Beef from one area to another,to feed on grass.

How much marbling does your end product have? Are they full grass fed or finished off for butchering?

I very recently smoked a fully grass-fed never grain beef brisket from a local ranch.    It was moist and delicious.    I followed the instructions here for normal brisket and didn't change anything.    But mine was a full packer so lots of fat on top.    A flat alone might be different.

I will absolutely keep buying from this ranch and smoking it.   :)

Are you allowed to bring your own meat ? Most folks have never eaten grass fed beef... It has a totally different flavor from "commercial" beef... Folks may not like it... It has a deep rich beef flavor that explodes in your mouth... Not something folks are used to or may like....

I was raised on grass fed beef and to me its the way beef should taste. My wife doesn't agree, never having it until she got with me. She says it has a game taste. But as far as smoking itor grilling, it doesn't require any different steps and the results are just the same.

Thanks for all the comments. I am part of a team and the the grass-fed brisket is for friends/family, no the comp. I will try it and see how it goes! 

I will report back in mid-October after the American Royal.

Definitely try smoking it at home first before taking it to a competition.

Also please report back on the quality of the end product. I have herd that 100% grass fed beef doesn't do well on long smokes due to the lower fat content. So I'm interested in hearing more and seeing some pics.
