Hi there. I smoked my first brisket the other day after reading as much as I could from all you experienced smokers out there.

The brisket turned out excellent and cooked somewhat faster than anticipated.

I was prepared for a 15 to 20 hour smoke after reading guidelines of 1-1.5 hrs per pound. After 10 hours the wait was over.

I threw a 15lb full packer on my smoker and kept it pretty close to 250F the whole time.

I had a thought at that point and decided to throw some electronics at the smoker and capture my brisket experience for analysis.

I guess you can call it Q-View.

;)

Howdy neighbor,

The data logger is a little project I threw together using thermocouples and a raspberry pi ($35 Linux computer). The software is actually for home energy monitoring http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/

I use this setup to monitor my house energy consumption and decided to use it with my smoker. I'm an electronics/programming kind of guy.

Pictures, probably next week when my camera comes back.

How did it turn out ?

I was pleasantly surprised, it was amazing ! Definitely on my list of favorites.

Cheers!

Very interesting, would love to know more about it...might have to take a drive up to Mayo someday! LOL

Congrats on the brisket!

Hi Gary, yup I read those very informative posts of yours prior to my brisket attempt.

Thanks for sharing.

Chad, I'd be more than happy to 'talk shop' with a fellow smoker, especially since we're practically neighbors.
