good to have back up and running first and foremost!!! kudos jeff and brian bigtime!!! as far as the rest, i lost some pm recipies i had saved that i hadnt finished also copying to my documents.... thats my fault. the important thing is i have not forgotten all i have learned from the fine folks here... that stayed, the site problem does not affect the most important thing. you are still able to go out and smoke them perfect ribs, do your brisket in the manner you prefer, make some awesome pulled pork like you can buy nowhere on the planet..... anyone got anything to gripe about, needs to go fire up there smoker and realize what they gained!!!! my .02

The post counts, rep points, and OTBS do NOT cause undue BS. It is people's reaction to them - or lack of them - that causes the BS.

Dave

It's all in the perception. What one considers an informative post, another might consider it BS. In long term, I think it balances itself out.

Well, since you had your Rant, I guess its only fair I toss this in here.
Not sure who exactly you were speaking about with your "boo hoo, and crying" insinuations, but some of us who have been here for more than a year or even years and lost THOUSANDS of posts and dozens of pm's with phone numbers and addresses and have helpedWHO KNOWS HOW MANY people might just take your rant as disrespectfull and unfounded. It is your opinion, and this is mine. When people have invested hundreds of hrs posting threads and offering help to strangers, and then have someone with a fraction of time invested , say that THEY are childish and YOU are sick of hearing about it. What gives with that? There are a few veterans who are very upset with the situation. We know its lost,4 months not a couple ,700 posts for me alone.
When I first came here, I wanted to learn, I learned, then I tried to help others, than that became my main mission. I would have NEVER sat here and "Poked the bear" like you have with your rant. When people gave their all to help the site grow and educate others, and then get that type of disrespect, it tends to show the mentality of a small few who tend to think its their way or the highway.

If I wanna be pissed abouit it I will be, and I don't need anyones permission. This isn't directed at just you, you just happened to make the most noise and least sense.I did notice that the ones who think its silly to be upset are the ones who have less than 1000 posts, Heck one of the is sites MOST helpfull persons Richtee, has lost over 2000 posts, and most of them were funtional posts and helpfull to many people.

I wasn't gonna say anything more than I have a couple days ago, but then I get to this wonderful thread. I have never so much as got a warning from the mods here, and have always tried to help as many as I could, or steer them in the right direction to get help, And I find it quite insulting that anyone here can put a price on anyone elses investment of time and thought.

I know how much work it was for Jeff, Brian, and Jerry to keep things orderly and get this fire put out. I am not trying to rekindle any fire, But I also am going to stand up for some of the heavy posters and largely dedicated few who took the big hit and lost allot of data that they trusted this site to keep and use.

And lets be clear, this "rant" is of my thoughts and words, and has in no way been meant to involve any opinions of those who I am speaking for.
Its been a powder keg in my own lil world, and this 3 page thread has set it off.

Rant off.

Jeff, you have a great site here, take care of it and the people who make it what it is,it will always be on top, Brian, I can only imagine the troubles you have seen, Jerry, Ken,Monty ,Lisa and any other mod I may have forgot.Your all doing a fine job, keep up the good work. You all do deserve a big high five and a bunch of cold drinks. I mean no disrespect to any of you. I hope my reply will be allowed to stay as well as the ones I was replying to.

Later!

I know it's too late for anything to be done and since I have only been here since july (I think) I didn't have a LOT of posts (600 - 700 I think) but IMO the rep points and OTBS are a neat part of the site. It's like a reward from your peers for a job well done and for taking the time to share it with friends on the board. Also when you give points you get the chance to send a personal comment to the person. I am upset about losing so many of my smokes, posts, and mainly the interaction with all the friends here and the advice I've gotten along the way. I understand though, thats long gone, so I'll just move on to the future. Thanks Jeff and Brian for all your hard work saving as much as you have. Before the crash I was a premier member. I'd like to have that reinstated please.

Thanks,

Mike

Thank you Daniel, my brother.

Jeff I know I was a "spice" to the site. And I was thrilled with finding others with my passion. And still am. And would like to be forever a member here, but I have a new direction. And as always, I will honor your rules.

Thanks for bringing us up to speed on the status of things as well as all the effort that has gone into getting us back. I've been reluctant to post or visit, being concerned we might loose it all again. A lot of good info was posted the past few months, but it was good getting it there and we can do it again. Thanks again guys for all your efforts

Thanks Jeff and Brian for all the hard work. I know alot people lost alot of posts and other information. But it could have been alot worse. I guess just be thankful they were able to restore all that they could. Thanks again.

Jason

Thank you Dan for your reply. I owe you and a bunch of others here an apology . My post was poorly thought out and written.

I did not mean to trivialize the countless hours of time , experience , and helpfulness that so many here have invested into this place. I'm sorry that it came out sounding that way.

I lost my car keys the other day. That really pssst me off. LOL
If ya only save the recipes here you are rolling dice. It is the nature of computer systems and web sights to go down. If ya want to save someones posted recipe just highlight it with your mouse and copy. Paste it in a word doc and print. Pretty simple thing to do.

uh rick,
As we age gracefully we tend to lose more stuff more often . Get used to it !LMAO

1894, appology accepted.Like I said, It wasn't directly totally at you.Its really just the situation, and the fact that some might not realize the investment potential.
I appreciate the opportunity to post my thoughts and blow off some steam.

Thanks for the apology. Hope everyone has a great smokin weekend.

Thank you for fixing the site. I've only been a member since the middle of November and had racked up almost 600 posts and several Q-views. I really enjoy the helpful folks around here and take a lot of pride in helping others to learn the art of smoking meat as I continue to also gain knowledge and experience.
I tip my cap to all the administrators and moderators as you all do an outstanding job.

More q-view to come.

Thanks Jeff for making SMF into one of the ( Wonders of the World ) . When I came to SMF in the first part of 2006 I didn't know anything about smoking , but now with the help of so many members of SMF I can now hold my head high when smoking for myself or others . Back then SMF was alot smaller and easier to manage and less problems but look at it now WOW , there has to be a reason why so many people are coming to SMF to lurk or to become members ! Jeff you have created a great site for all types of smokers from novice to pro's world wide , you have selected great and knowledgeable people to help monitor and keep it up and running . I believe if it wasn't for these people and the people that came to SMF to share and teach people like me it would not be to where it is today .
Do we ever ask ourself why so my people come to SMF ? It's a great
place to come to for ideas , friendship , recipes , etc . In the real world we are all strangers to one other but when we log-in we are all one big family and families do have problems from time to time but they work it out , which I hope SMF will . And yes I believe that all the members that made SMF what it is today should be recognized with something like points , OTBS , reps , etc. A big THANKS to Jeff , Brian , and the family of SMF.

I don't know if anyone else had this problem but I just finally had to register again.

I had only been a member for a few weeks(and only made a few posts) before everything crashed and I just sorta been lurking waiting for everything to get back to normal. It looks like most everybodys settings were restored but the system didn't even acknowledge the existense of my email address.

Just curious if there were other instances of this.

Anyway glad to be back online!!!

Marc

If you registered between 10/10/08 and jan when the site crashed then you would have to re-register. Glad to have you back.
