A company called Diamond Plate Pits built a style of smoker with the firebox behind and parallel with the cook chamber.
No I never thought of that. It's to late for this one as I have the wholes drilled already but I'll keep that in mind if I build another one. Is there any benefit to doing if like that?

It makes for a more compact layout when you have a long skinny firebox.
Performance wise, I don't think it makes any difference.
