Ive been looking around everywhere for my answer and have not found it. I have only seen one uds like it. I was wondering about having the exhaust stack come out the side of the drum? So the lid wouldnt have a bulky stack on it. I was thinking about using some 1.5 or 2 inch pipe with a nipple, and a elbow. But im thinking that since i havent seen it done that theres a reason for it. I also thought about using some 3 stove piping with the lid on the top to control the exhaust? kinda like this? http://www.bigbabysmoker.com/getting-started/exhaust-arm-assembly/

Thanks

GR, morning and welcome to the forum...  That particular "exhaust location" is used on reverse flow smokers... Having the exhaust 3-4" above the highest cooking grate in the smoker works in that application....  No reason it would not work in an UDS....  I would put 2 exhaust in... 180 deg from each other... 2" above the top grate and extend to the top of the drum for starters...  No exhaust controls are necessary... the exhaust should be fully open when smoking...  Soup cans can be used to plug them off when not in use...

Just thinking out-loud here...  No facts, just thoughts....

Pictures and a report on how it works would be appreciated by all on the forum....  A new UDS design is always welcome.....  They are an historic part of smoking...   Dave

Well I've read that anything over 2 inches in diameter doesn't work. That's why I thought about adding the plate like some larger smokers have. My welder is in another state so welding anything right now is out of the question. So im trying to think of creative ways of adding an exhaust. Plus it would look awesome.
