First of all , I would think I'd find uninfected wood. Wood left on the ground tends to attract ants, termites ,beetles , ect.  I gather my wood (when possible) fresh cut and stack it above ground level on a rack of sorts to lessen the possibility of bugs.

Split and stacked on cement(something that water can't get to)pads , in a way to insure air circulation and minimum to no water contact for ~1yr.

I don't get wood that has set outside - on the ground - for a period of time or old wood (3-4yrs or so ). The wood should weight (as a rule of thumb) a little heavier than it looks ; considering it has cured , as compared to the 'green weight'.

After my curing , I usually take it into the garage and stack it in my wood bin corner...

to pick and use as I wish...

Have fun and...

Treat the ground where you will be storing the wood for termites then set a wood rack in the treated area. Put the wood on the rack to dry
