Saying goodbye to an old relic.

My 1960's Sears Cold Spot 15 (cubic ft) deep freeze died last night or this morning. There was still frost and most everything is still frozen except a couple things on the very top.

Considering I paid $30 for it on craigslist in September of 2019, I'd say I have gotten an excellent return on my investment.

The past few months I had marveled at how long this old tank had been around and that it was still running. But I couldn't help but wonder how much time it had left. Today she said enough was enough. Thanks old girl for keeping my food cold!

I just ran and got dry ice to keep everything cold. There was still frost inside but a few things on the very top were thawed. I'm about to run and go get the new whirlpool 16 cubic ft deep freeze that will replace her.

The rest of the day will be spent transferring the food over and moving the old one out of the garage and putting the new one in its place.

~60 years!! I bet that thing is heavy, too. I've got a 12 cubic foot in my garage that's 35 years old and hopefully not about to die anytime soon. Things just aren't made the same as they once were...

I lost 2 pkgs of jalapeño cheddar brats (2 brats per pkg) in the deep freeze and a pkg of ego waffles. The top center is losing cold. I tossed the dry ice to throw on top until I get the new one home. It could have been worse.

I have a chest freezer I bought new back in the 90's sometime still going out in the garage. The top has rusted with a few pinholes here and there. Also have a stand up in the garage along side it that I bought from someone off Craig's List over ten years ago. It is older than the chest freezer, no idea of how old it is, though, but still working. The garage is not insulated no heated so they both have to put up with the high's in the summer and lows in the winter. Never a problem with either one of them.

It looks like it shorted itself out last night. I checked the breaker but it was good. The light burned a hole right through the lid and the top of the waffle package and two brat pkgs, which explains why those were the only things that went bad in there as they were in the center at the top. The compressor doesn't even kick in. But all is well that ends well. I salvaged the rest of the food.

Now to find someone to help push this tank in the back of the truck and I can haul it away.

I'm not so sure I wouldn't have the old one checked out before tossing

I have a vacuum sealer, I'm just lazy. It's such a pain to get out because it's way too big.

I actually just bought an Instant Seal from GraniteStone and I'll be using it regularly because it's small and portable but I can run any width of vacuum seal through it. It seals a full brisket or ribs or I can do small things like fruits and snacks. So everything from here on out will be vacuum sealed.

I lost my Sears cold spot refrigerator that came out of my grandmother's house few years back. Remember her having to defrost it regularly when I was little. It got moved to our garage when the freezer door spring broke in the late 70's. It became part of my toolboxes when I started working on cars for living in 1980. It came back to the garage in 93. Lost it to fire ants in 21. Coldest beer I ever had!

I made a set of ramps to get elk/deer in the back of my truck, and have, but they get used much more with putting things in and out of the bed. Saves my back time and time again.

That's why I had mine delivered. I love my Challenger, but it just isn't built for hauling.

This is out on my deck. Garage ready can withstand outside temps of 0°F-110°F. Rarely gets even close to those temps in the Seattle area.

Kudos to your Cold Spot, though. They don't make 'em like that any more.

They don't make them like they use to....that one, you could change out compressors and she'd run like a top again. The coils are thicker so not as prone to leaks...

I replaced the cord on my nephew's garage beer fridge a few years ago, with a modern grounded one.
I don't remember the make, but I do remember a metal tag on the bottom that said year of manufacture was 1955. Still running strong.

Yes it is. I need to get it painted and get the bullet hole fixed in it. I bought it from a guy in Aurora and someone fired a firearm into the air on 4th of July and the bullet came down into his hood. The insurance company just bought him a new hood instead of fixing it. What a waste but for $175 it was my gain.

It's the Sport hood with the scoop (non-functional). I like the style better than the flat hood I have.

Unfortunately that was not an option today. I am 54 miles from the nearest Lowe's, that was the last one in stock and Home Depot had them backordered.
