I decided to build my own smokehouse, and while things are going smoothly so far, I have some questions that I cannot find answers to anywhere it seems.

I want to create an inner smoke chamber and am wondering what material to use. Keeping a budget in mind, I am thinking plywood sheet but does anyone think the glues or material used in plywood could release toxic fumes during hot smoking (240 deg f)?

If I could find thin sheets of aluminum like that used in commercial (cheaper) smokers, that would be great. No luck finding it in anything other than expensive 12" squares though.

Ideas? Comments?

Thank you all.

if you are going to hot smoke.......you can't use plywood..........look for cheap tounge and groove pine maybe?

i know others will be along..........goat......cowgirl are two that have built their own smoke house........but i do know, if you are hot smoking......can't use plywood because of the glues

First off, welcome to the forum. Please go to "Roll Call" and introduce yourself. Second. I built my smoke house from my old garage door plus a few 2X4's and a 4ftX4ft piece of sheet metal for the roof. But I only use it for cold smoking. Maybe if I was to sand blast the interior of it and paint it with BBQ paint, I could hot smoke in it.
I would not recomend plywood of osb. May some cedar, or pine planks? I believe Cowgirl has built one from wood.
Hope this helps....
Andy.

Also, check out goat's homepage...has a picture of him smoking sausage.

I wouldn't use plywood on the inside unless I was covering it with metal.... How big Of a smokehouse you talking about building? I have seen some in my area here built with cinder blocks or bricks...... Just a thought......I size will really be the big determiner of cost.........You could build one with 2x4's and line the inside with tounge and groove ceder and insulate it and sheet the outside with some kind of siding or corigated metal............ Just some thoughts and ideas........All depends on size and how much you have to work with for the cost.............
