My friend has a friend who does food photography, so he asked me if I ever actually contact companies to see if they send samples for rub to do reviews.

Has any one here done this? I want to do reviews of rubs, but for me to order most costs 20 bucks a shaker ordering online. <Cost+SH>. Do you all think there is enough interest here in some one doing a review on rubs to make it worth while for me to try and actually figure out how I go about doing these reviews? I see people on youtube who review appliances etc, but that is also a video blog.

How do you do it when you just want to do reviews but all you got is a website and you are a barely articulate guy in Wisconsin? LOL!

Never done it myself. Why not just try contacting a few of the companies you want to review, let them know what you are doing and see if they will shoot you some freebies? The worst they can do is say no. If you put up a review on here I am sure there are people who will check it out.

I would say you are much more than "barely articulate." You are interesting and congenial. I'd be interested in reading your reviews.

When I've seen reviews of products on blogs, they make it sound like they were offered the product for free in return for using and reviewing the product. It seems a way to help them advertise their product, so maybe companies would be interested if you contacted them.

It also seems like your reviews would make good article material for the site, if that's the intended purpose of the article section. Maybe it's something you can talk to site staff about.

Well I sent out some emails, one response back asking for my shipping information.

I'm going to write down a form I'll use for each review if this pans out. So at least I'll always have consistency in the written part. I informed each company I emailed my base line of meat is a pork butt for pulled pork. I figured that is very likely the most commonly smoked protein.

Here's hoping I can start a line of reviews then! I'd like to get an index set up, be interesting IMO for a 'BBQ Database' of sauces and rubs.

Also Jeeze Kris. Now you make me sound like a Pro! I got nothing on guys like Chile or Bear! I just follow in the foot steps of those who truly know! :P

But thanks for the encouragement :)

Many companies are happy to send samples. Kikkoman sent 8 1 pound envelopes of various powdered Soy sauce and teriyaki mixes for a project I was working on. Worst case was one company asked I pay shipping but the product was free...JJ
