That is awesome...

How about for the grate lift tool you make it with two hooks... Put down in between and turn so it hooks two of the grate bars... This should keep it from twisting/turning as it's lifted...

I was thinkin' along those same lines, Keith. Want to design something that works good, but keep it simple.

After thinking about it a lil more... Might want to make two to lift with both hands if it's that heavy...

A fine piece of art Red. Looks fantastic . . .

Much appreciated Sir!

It's not as much that it's super heavy...once you get your hands on it. But it's a tight fit in that main frame, and the half-grates are heavy enough, and snug enough, that it'll be a little hard to get a grip on one to get it out. Once it's out of that tight spot, it's not hard to handle or lift.

I'll study on it some more, but thinking that one lift hook will suffice.

Well done!!!! That’s gonna be grilling soon!

Thank you, my friend!

Thnks…..Oh my thought is just a t-handle with a j hook, 2 of them to lift the grills…..simple and easy….ie like a manhole lift hook….

This has been so enjoyable to watch Red. Can't thank you enough. The final result is about to be revealed and I know it's going to wow Jim and everyone else here. Great work bud!

That's about what I think I'll end up with - something simple that I can throw together from materials I already have on hand. Thanks Cortney!

Thank you Brother! It's been a real enjoyable cooker to build too!

Lookin good! Joel
I won't need a grate hook. I have pull rod hooks from my body and paint days that'll work. Actually the same tool could be used to lift the ash plate with a 1/8" slot cut in it.
A tool holder would be cool.

Well Alright! One less chore for me to worry about! And consider the tool hanger a done deal Brother!

Another quick update!

I finished the last couple of chores this morning, and am ready to call the fabrication of this grill complete!

One thing that I had forgotten about showing and explaining was the ash-catching setup. I designed the trap door in the bottom of the chamber to match the size of a hotel half-size steaming pan. I welded angle iron runners under the door opening, and the pan slides right in.

A view from the under side. You can just make out the angle runners on the sides, where the pan slides in/out.

As I mentioned in the last update, I cut out a piece of 1/4" plate to make an ash door cover. This plate will overlap the fire bricks by around a half-inch all the way around the trap door. I welded a little handle to the top of the plate, and some scrap pieces of angle iron underneath, to serve as guides to drop the cover in place nice and snug.

Next I cut a short piece of angle iron, cut 2 notches in it the right size, and welded it to the front of the work table on the right side. This will serve as a hanger for the coal rake and the coal shovel, to hang them out of the way when not in use.

Turned out pretty good!

Only thing left to do now is surface prep and get get it painted. This will be a tedious job...mostly because I don't really like painting. And I'm definitely not as good a painter as I am a welder lol! There's no real rush...I want to wait until there are no more cold nights before I paint, so it'll have a better chance of curing properly. Our temps are getting warmer, so it shouldn't be more than a week or 2 until I can go ahead with the paint.

Anyway, I expect that the next (and last) update will be after it's all painted and purty!

Thanks again for checking it out!

That is a very fine build, Joel.
Have you broke the news to Jim that someone else is actually getting it?

Appreciate it John! I already told Jim, I'm wanting to see lots of his cook threads on this grill. Always makes me happy to see something I built being enjoyed by a forum buddy!

Man Joel, this build has really been well thought out. Execution is outstanding. Jim, you are about to receive a one-of-a-kind Premier Unit.

Can't wait to see the final. It's going to be Perfect!
