I really considered trying to build my own. In the end, I found a great deal on this one from a local guy, so I just went for it.

A quick update:

After spending some time using my laser, a tape measure, and a big square to lay out the dimensional cuts, I got the plate steel all cut up into panels today - for the main body of the grill.

The bottom (floor) panel is back left, with the front and back panels next. And the 2 sides are the short panels on the right.

Then I got a square tube frame laid out to reinforce the bottom panel. Should make it plenty strong.

Didn't do any welding yet because I realized this afternoon that I'm out of shielding gas. So I'll have to make a trip to the welding supply before I start welding these panels together. I'll post another update after I get that started.

CO2, Argon/CO2 or other? Curious. I previously just used CO2 but my new tank is Argon/CO2 but I haven't used it yet. I also upgraded to a larger tank since the CO2 one recently expired and I didn't want to deal with re certifying it just yet.

I use C25 - a mix of 25% CO2 and 75% Argon. It's the least expensive option around here, and is kinda the "go to" shielding gas for most general purpose mig welding of mild carbon steel.
