We continue to get drenched here in upstate NY. I was hoping to have Father's Day to be able to smoke some ribs for the family. But - our long range forecast has rain (and lots of it) running right through the weekend and into Tuesday.

I have only smoked Ribs and a Beer Can Chicken so far this year, either a time or weather issue.

I am enjoying all the reading and learning I am doing while on this site. Hope to get to test it out more for the rest of the summer! Keep posting those Q Views for us less fortunate ones!

Sorry to hear about the bad weather. I was wondering how your smoking was going, you were gathering a lot of info the past few weeks. Will keep my fingers crossed for good weather your way.

My brother, who also smokes regularly, chides me about "going crazy" by cooking large quantities when I smoke.

But he has the dilemma of the OP: it's raining too much for him here in NY to set up a smoke for the weekend. Meanwhile, I have two large smoked chickens and six racks of smoked babybacks in the freezer from last weekend's 'crazy'ness; all I need do is put the oven on for a few minutes, and I have home-smoked food for 15 people!

Of course I'd prefer to do the reheat on the grill, but if the rain doesn't let up the oven works just fine.

I feel for your want. the weather sometimes is not our friend. I have been known to cook under an umbella but smoking might be a strech it's a long time. But then again it would be worth it. Or maybe I'll smoke some for you.

Same weather forecast here in Syracuse, 90% chance of rain over the weekend. I've got a covered deck that I can work under but if I didn't I'd rig up a temporary roof with a sheet of plywood or a tarp, or both.
How bad do ya want them Ribs? lol

OK... this thread brings to mind a question for me. I have a nice dry covered porch, but I live in Portland, OR - where it rains from Sept. to June (lol... not quiet that bad - but close!). Can you run a successfull smoke in rainy cooler weather, or does it just screw with temp controll to much? This is using an offset box char-griller.

Depends on what you do to compensate.
First, your damp charcoal will be more difficult to light. Some here use big tupperware to store the stuff dry.

Next, it really pays to have some sort of overhead rain barrier. Once the fire's up to temp a light drizzle is no big deal, but steady rain will drag down temps.. so a tarp or "open tent" or lean-to or patio/porch covering is a good idea. I'm gonna rig up something this summer.

After that, it depends! A cold windy day is never ideal for smoking - add the rain and it really diminishes the enjoyment IMO.

This rain on Long Island sucks - no smoking, no US Open and its causing havoc with my job at the airport. Maybe just sit in the garage and drink some beers.

Cool good to know! We get a lot of days that are "misty" rain but not necissarily windy or that cold.... just damp. Will look into getting a big tupperware or maybe small lidded garbage can to store my lump in. If you don't smoke/grill in Oregon when it rains you would only get about 12 weeks a year... lol

The Irish come to oregon and say "Damn! Turn down the green! It's hurting my eyes!"

.... but it's a dry heat...... (like that really matters when it is 115 °F!!) Will think some good thoughts about sending some your way Iceman... lord knows we get plenty around here. Our news casters have about 12 differant levels of "rain"... lol.

Just wondering about how much those tickets cost? If its raining or not its pretty awesome having tickets.

I got the package from the USGA. I think it was $500 ( I bought them back in the fall) for the entire week for all accsess. I sold my tickets for thursday and friday fo 125 each day and sold monday and tuesdays practice rounds for 40 each. So it doesn't end up costing too much.
