I'm a bit of a newb... so I have to ask, what is the purpose of the charcoal ring?

thanks

I've since made a new larger basket out of aluminum mesh. The reasoning behind it is that it allows the fire to breathe from all sides, the top and the bottom. I've run it without the basket, and it works ok with smaller amounts of charcoal, but if you fill the bowl, it only really burns right next to the vents. I hope that makes sense.

That makes a lot of sense! thanks a lot for the explanation. I was thinking of building this setup but using a AMNPS as a smoke generator... I'm guessing I won't need the charcoal ring if i just want to cold smoke

I ended up drilling holes in the top of the can also. This is the Silver joe.
