I've never noticed any difference after they have sat around over the winter. I do notice after a long period of rain, they do tend to absorb a little bit of moisture.
Getting moisture in it will happen, but that tends to slow down the heat given off, and extend the time it'll burn/smolder until it gets the moisture out of it...
