I had an old 20-pound due for a refill so I took it to a local store. The clerk was on the ball and he checked the date on it. He said something like "1971! This is the oldest one I've ever seen. This is older than me. This is older than my mom. It's done its service." So I got an exchange.

How many of you have kept using old propane tanks?

I have one for compressed air... I use it to fill tires or operate air tools, for a very short time.. works well for my staple gun.... Also have one I cut in half... Use it to melt lead for bullet casting.....

The filling stations here won't fill them if they are out of date. Been that way here for several years now. Used to be one place that wasn't on the ball but they got a lecture from the state, or so the attendant said. I had been taking my out date 40lb tank to them for the last 4 years because they were the only one that would still fill it. Went a month ago and it was a no go.

Blue You do get some mileage out of your tanks LOL Just had the same thing as Case tank was only a year out of date.

When I was at that store, they had some bigger propane tanks and I cast sort of a hungry eye over them. I have one of those adapters that can connect a tank to whatever uses one of the small cylinders. I have one of those pop-up Coleman road trip grills and a briefcase-sized stove and they can run pretty much run forever when connected to a tank.

Never had a propane smoker, though.
