Pork pricing?

I wish pork was cheaper here...I mean there are more pigs than people here :) Not too much of an exaggeration.

Understand your pain.

I live in the middle of one of the largest ag producing areas in the world, the largest for many products.

Prices still high.

Some crops in the middle of the country wasted on fuels. Less feed for animals.

In my area, water diverted from ag for fish projects and runs to the ocean.  Some of what can actually be produced is exported.

Up to 750,000 acres going fallow in this huge valley.  Lost crop for a year for some growers.  Worse for tree farmers who are tearing out trees.  Not enough water to keep the trees alive, let alone produce a crop this year.

750,000 fallow acres equates to roughly 75,000 unemployed farm workers.

You can imagine the pain to grower and worker alike.

That also translates to lost government revenue for the smart politicians who are artificially causing much of this suffering.

Frustrating.

I just bought a twin pack of pork butts for 1.89 a pound for about 22 lbs of butt.  Going to make these for my youngest son's high school graduation party friday.  I try to troll local Food Lion for their discounted beef.  They cut the price as it nears the expiration.  Bought a couple of corned beef packs and saved about 3-4 bucks each.  I throw them in the freezer as soon as I get them so no problems doing this so far.

I just called my local meat market to order a whole hog for my birthday cook. Mind you, last year I picked up a 64lb hog at $1.99lb. So I knew going into this it would be a little more expensive because I was getting a 30lb pig. When the lady told me it was going to be $3.99lb I fell out of my chair. She claims there is a pig virus killing pigs and so there is a shortage. I am going to ask around for other prices because I refuse to pay $3.99lb for the piggy.

The wholesalers and Retail stores will ride the virus problem until the summer BBQ season is over.Since a Sow has a litter in 3months,3weeks and 3 days.The pig market has been replaced.The loss to farmers was in small pigs not finished pigs and they will recoup their losses over long term.

With beef being in short supply all over the world Pork will stay higher then normal but not as high rite now.

Around here I was paying about $1.89/lb for boneless pork butt last year.  Did a 'break in the new smoker' party and paid $2.29 for the same stuff.  Brisket is stupid.  Paid $5.99 at Sams only to find out my local market had it for $4.50.  Baby backs were somewhere around $3.99 at Sams.

At least I now know why the prices are so high...

Our local Kroger has whole Boston Butt onsale for 1.99 lb right now and bb for 2.99 lb
