I have some friends that couldn't make it to my cook on Labor Day, so I was going to cook for them this weekend. I called the meat market manager at my Publix grocery store to make sure he was going to have some good butts for the end of the week. He assured me that it was no problem. I asked how much they were and he said, $3.69. I almost passed out, but asked what has happened? They were $1.99 last week. He told me, "football has started, so a lot of folks tailgate and the price is $3.69". That's when I asked him, "So since somewhere there is a football game, a $1.99 butt now sells for $3.69". All he could say is that he doesn't set the prices. At that, I could surely buy another freezer.

And to think I was going to look at butts in Ga. when I go LOL

I would suggest shopping around, unless you are stuck on Publix. (always found them kinda high myself) Sams and food lion are usually lower on boston butts.

if you are making PP (which it sounds like you are) you could try using a picnic. it should be cheaper and if you put a little more work into you can still make good cue out of it.

but you are right i can get brisket for less than that and i would rather have brisket honestly than PP so try to shop around.

Hope you find something at reasonable price,

Wow!  I didn't realize that butt prices were also influenced by football.  I know that the wings are always jacked up during football season, and they sell out no matter what they charge.  I've been getting butts for .99 a pound and wings for 2.49 a pound.  I guess those days are over for a while.

not sure football had anything to do with it. We are coming out of Labor Day weekend and the $1.99 might have been a holiday sale price. I know we had them for $.87/lb for the holiday week, now they are reg price. Sorry can't quote that price, I just know it's alot more than I'm willing to pay, so I don't look.

Schnucks just had them for 69 cents a lb with a $25 purchase .

mosparky , watch the ad for Schnucks . They don't always post the price for whole butts ,  If you see the house made sausage on sale that most likely means they have the butts at a lower price as well .

:points:Around here, all I have to do is wait a few weeks. Somebody will have them on sale within that few week period. Paid $.99/lb a few weeks ago. Bought 16 butts. 6 already gone. Various sausages and BBB. Actually, BBB is in smoker as I speak. Another 8 going to great niece's birthday party. 40+ expected, but less than 50. Leftovers???? There are no Leftovers. "Theses are not the Leftovers you're looking for." LOL...

Points to whoever figures that last quote out first.

Definitely shop around.  I've stopped buying meat at my local grocer because even on sale their prices were higher than three other places I can easily drive to.  The most distant (and cheapest) place costs me about a gallon of gas round trip in my truck, but I can save five to ten times that much over what my local grocer charges when buying butts and brisket.  Chicken alone isn't worth the time or the drive.  I was picking up general food items the other day at the local grocer and one of the meat cutters I knew said "we don't see you around much any more."  I just smiled.

Found a Wegmans close enough to take a ride.Pork Shoulder Blade Roast $1.49.Picked up 2 de-boned and ground one today for 3 types of sausage.

I pay that price at my local Wegmans. I'm happy with the quality and what it turns out. I think it's a good deal compared to some places that sell at $2.99 lb or more.

I think they're a little crazy there.

My local Cash & Carry has Butts, Picnics and legs; all boneless and all under $2/lb (I think the expensive cut was $1.79)

Find somewhere else to shop.
