Aldi has boneless pork butts on sale for $0.85 a pound now through Tuesday, October 15. 2019. Check the weekly ad for your local store to make sure they are participating. https://www.aldi.us/en/weekly-specials/our-weekly-ads/

We picked up two, each in the 6# range. One is in "freezer camp" and will probably end up being Buckboard Bacon in a month or so. The other is already scored, rubbed with mustard, then coated with Pork Rub (I took the easy way out and used an HEB/Fiesta rub that I had on hand.) That one is chilling till Friday morning when I'll pop it in the smoker.

Now's a good time to stock up if you have an Aldi in your area!

My photo of the flyer says $0.85/lb. and that is what it rang up as, despite the $1.49 price on the label, which is apparently the current pricing in other areas.

But, if you're in Texas, etc., definitely use the link above to check pricing in your area.

Despite the delays and the hiccups along the way, I went ahead and smoked both of those Butts from Aldi.

I was almost 12 hours late getting them on the smoker because it was pouring down rain. Didn't get them on till after 3 pm. 6# each and they smoked for about five hours before it started raining again. (Bear in mind that we've been in a severe drought for about four months. Only 3/4" all summer long. So I can't complain that it is finally starting to rain a bit.)

Snatched the butts out of the electric smoker because of the rain, put them in foil pans, wrapped them in more foil and put them in the oven at 265. Over the next several hours, I slowly bumped the heat up to 300 because I was exhausted and needed some sleep. Finally, at 3 AM, they had only reached 190 degrees internal temperature but I could not take any more. So I pulled them out of the oven, let them cool a little and put them in the fridge under the plastic covers that come with the pans.

My son showed up Saturday morning and we had a full day of things I wanted to accomplish while he was here, including cleaning up my long, skinny beds along the fence where I am going to plant garlic and Onions later this month.

So Sunday morning, I popped the butts in covered pans with some apple juice in the bottom at 350 degrees for a couple of hours. We got them shredded and packed into 8 vacuum bags, each with enough for four sandwiches. All of the bags have a few tablespoons of apple juice added for a bit of moisture. (I keep apple juice frozen in one cup quantities in ziplock bags so it's always on hand.). We have a Cambro container with a chunk of frozen apple juice stashed in the fridge. We will eat on for the next few days and we made pulled pork sandwiches for lunch.

Major good eats at a bargain price.
