I'm puttiing a quote together on building a reverse flow for a guy and want to do it on the cheap for him. I friend of mine told me that pickled and oiled steel is a lot cheaper then plain ol' hot rolled. My concern is that the oil will cause problems. Anyone have any knowledge on this? Thank you.

Couldn't you use something like TSP, scrub it out well, wash it again, and then burn out the rest of the residue with the propane torch?  Those torches run at around 1500 F (I think).  Not much is going to be in the barrel after you give it a burst of the flame.  Just my 2 cents.

I was going to give my 12 year old boy a pair of nitrile gloves, a can of acetone and a bag of rags and tell him to get cleaning.  I figured that if he wants to learn to work with metal, he should learn the crappy parts first.  I wasn't sure if the acid bath or oil that is used to "pickle" the steel would be hazardous when exposed to flame. Thank you for the advice.  The guy decided to go a different route with the build.  While my price was almost $3000 less then the Lang version he wants, I was still over double what he was expecting.  Oh well, I can't blame him, I was alittle shocked when I figured out a price too. Thanks again for the help.
