Living in North Western Ontario one could say we are adjusted to the cold but I do not think anyone gets adjusted to -51F wind chill. Pets are no different. With the cold snap expected through 2\3rds of the US that most have never experienced before make sure you look after your fur buddies.

The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is advising pet parents to take extra care to keep their animals safe amid freezing temperatures.

Extreme winter weather can cause serious risks such as frostbite and hypothermia, according to a media release issued by the society on Thursday.

Animals rely on owners to protect them from the elements, the provincial animal welfare charity added.

“Even a short time in severe cold can be dangerous for animals,” Dr. Joey Tang, the society’s interim medical director, was quoted as saying in the release.

“By watching for signs of discomfort and making small adjustments to your routine, you can help keep your pets safe this winter.”

The society recommends that owners keep a close eye on their dogs when they are outside playing and watch for early signs of cold, such as shivering or holding up their paws."
Todays temps and they say it will stick around for about a week.

Good reminder. Anything under 0° is to cold for my pups paws. I put the dog paws on her and she loves it. Saves me from having to pick her up and warm her feet. She gets the dog sweater also. At -22° this Am, its gonna be a short walk to mailbox and back, can probably get frostbite on her face pretty quickly also.

We used to have a husky/malamute mix, and during the winter months he'd bury himself in the snow. When we called him to come in his head would pop up out of the snow. He preferred to be outside and most days he'd come in sniff around the house and then head back to the door wanting to go outside.

When we had pups they were house bound for the most part in the extreme cold though admittedly my dachshunds loved the snow but to there own detriment as they didn't want come in and I'd have go get them.

Here in coastal RI the low tomorrow morning is supposed to be around 4°F with a high of 15°F and then Sunday into Monday the possibility 15"+ of snow.Doesn't get anymore Winter than that for coastal RI.

Plenty of booze and food for the games Sunday.

tossing out extra feed for the stray cats that hang out here. water bowl dont last long in liquid form out there tho.

A suggestion I read:

IF you are one to just leave them outside for X amount of time, do this:

go outside WITH them. See how long you last. Then both of you come inside and hopefully you've seen the light.

Our dog is smart enough not to go out in the rain, but he loves the snow but doesn't pay attention to how cold it is. His paws are good to about 10-15 degrees F before he starts lifting his paws. He always wants to go for a walk except in the rain. I've had to carry him back to the house a few times when it is too cold for his feet. Even then he still wants to stay out. I've tried the paw boots but he wants nothing to do with them besides tearing them to shreds, but he loves the snow like no dog I've ever had.

We always go outside with ours. Its too risky otherwise, one chases dear, and we have mtn lions.

In the cold, one of our labs will barely leave the breezeway and do his business right next to the house, or in snow he will let it fly anywhere on the driveway. The other one is super picky and wander till his feet hurt from the cold, then go.

I gotta watch them both, or they wont go. Especially in rain. soon as they feel rain they turn tail for the the front door

Takes me longer to get her dressed then it does for her to pee LOL
Just like dressing the young kids before they go out and play in the snow.
Boots and jacket. Has no problem with boots. Tap the leg it is going on and she lifts it. Such a good dog.
