The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is advising pet parents to take extra care to keep their animals safe amid freezing temperatures.
Extreme winter weather can cause serious risks such as frostbite and hypothermia, according to a media release issued by the society on Thursday.
Animals rely on owners to protect them from the elements, the provincial animal welfare charity added.
“Even a short time in severe cold can be dangerous for animals,” Dr. Joey Tang, the society’s interim medical director, was quoted as saying in the release.
“By watching for signs of discomfort and making small adjustments to your routine, you can help keep your pets safe this winter.”
The society recommends that owners keep a close eye on their dogs when they are outside playing and watch for early signs of cold, such as shivering or holding up their paws."
