So I've been smoking on my Pit Boss for almost 2 years now and have tried many different "flavor" of pellets. My pallet is that of a wild goat so I don't get the nuances of say a cherry or hickory pellet as most. I'm doing some jerk chicken thighs tomorrow with some Royal Oak charcoal pellets. I'm hoping for that flavor from back when dad would grill out back in the 60s/70s. Has anyone tried charcoal pellets ? Will report back next week with the results.

I've used the Pit boss brand . I got a few bags at closeout price . I liked them . Seemed to give a lot of smoke . Not sure I got any real charcoal flavor .

The RO charcoal pellets are pretty good. They are a mixture of charcoal and wood if I recall. But they burn good and are well made. Flavor wise they are pretty unremarkable like most every pellet. Smoke flavor is very subtle

I bulk up my pellet hopper with about a 50/50 mix, i don't go 100% charcoal, it does add a bit charcoal smell to the smoke, taste wise its suttle. Depending on what you're smoking, beef doesn't respond too much, chicken probably would.

Its just a matter of trying it and you can make your own determination

So did jerk thighs Saturday with the Royal Oak pellets. I could really smell the charcoal in the smoke. Could not taste it on the chicken probably because it was so heavily seasoned and spicy. Would probably work better with lightly seasoned chicken. I will use this for meatloaf.

If you want a REAL treat, try this meatloaf recipe. 😁

Has anyone tried charcoal pellets ?
Yup. Last year in January I scored a couple 20lb bags $8.97 a piece. I don't own a pellet smoker/grill but I use pellets/dust with my MES for smoke.

I will very often do steaks in my MES and use the RO pellets for smoke then do a quick reverse sear.
These pellets definitely impart a charcoal profile to the meat. This has become my preferred method for doing steaks these days.

Here's the thread from last year:

Ever since I went to a pellet setup for the majority (due to time availability) things have never been the same, not necessarily in a good way but not bad either I guess, just different.
Honestly I have had just as good of luck with the cheaper brands that I can get a the local Fleet Farm (AKA Midwest Man's Mall) in the Bear Mountain and Grillers Gold Blends. That being said my comparative is Pit Boss, Treager and Weber Grillmaster. Have not tried Lumber Jack (found a place near me that carries them now) and would like to try Knotty Wood

Done the char- hickory from Lumberjack a few times. I like it.
Prob. my favorite pellet, along with straight hickory or pecan.
I tend to us hickory on things I want to taste more smoke on, or a mix of Char hickory, and reg. hickory pellets.

I think the char hickory will be a great choice for the O.P's Jerk chicken.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!!!
Dan.

I think there is a difference in the flavor from different brands. I tried about 4-5 kinds before settling on Lumberjack Competition Blend. Seems to have the right amount of smoke and flavor.

I’ve burned through a couple of bags of Lumberjack Char-Hickory and I’ve liked the results so far. I usually mix them with another type - the last couple of times it’s been 50/50 char-hickory and competition blend. I just finished an overnight smoke on a pork butt this morning for a get together this afternoon. It’s all wrapped up and resting comfortably in a cooler lined with towels.

Pics or it didn't happen 😆
