I will always vote recteq. I love my flagship (previous gen) and my friend has 2 of them. We both are very happy with the smoker and their customer service is top notch.

Another great thread. I like the Weber Smoque XL and the RecTeq Deck Boss. Now if I can only find $900, and talk my spouse into it. :emoji_laughing:

I'm have not cooked with a pellet grill and have wondered about how it compares to a propane grill, which I currently have.

Looking at some other forums I understand that even with the high temperatures the searing is not all that great without a GrillGrate. It seems the recommendation for searing anything is the reverse sear method.

Any insight?

Yep I fully agree with the searing. Assuming you already have a typical gas grill, you will get a much better sear with that. So yep, I typically do a reverse sear for steak, tri tip etc.

Searing is really my only negative. If you are looking for more smoke flavor, you can buy a smoke tube and light it to add to the smoke. I don't think you will ever quite get the smoke flavor of a stick burner (like my avatar) but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

It sounded too good to be true! I was looking for a reason to consolidate from the Smoke Vault propane smoker, MES 30, and propane gas grill into a single unit for the deck.

I have a couple of smoke tubes, so that's not a problem, but we do more grilling than smoking.

I had to go look this morning , because I thought I had heard no vac needed on these too .

The " chute " for the grease drop is removeable via a wing nut , so no tools . That way the ash gets scraped into the lower drawer , and no vac needed .
That's a big feature for the Webers , and one I can say is awesome . Quick and easy to clean .
Looks to me , from having a smoke fire , the new designs made sure to stop the mixing of the ash and grease . That's an improvement for sure .

I find it MUCH easier to clean with a few shots of compressed air. I tested it a few times without even breaking it down and it works great. Not sure if you can do that will all of them but it works for the Smokefire. On the Smokefire the pot itself burns quite clean but the area right below it is what builds up.
Yea the smoke fire and searwood are totally different animals from the other pellets around and have the minimal cleaning as far as ash. Weber is on to something for sure with them. It took Weber a long time to perfect the Genisis grill and with the latest upgrades they have made the real deal with it. I suspect the searwood is really close to hitting the same level. The smoque will be the same as other pellets on the ash.

I have always gotten "crusty's" in my fire pot but I burn a ton of pellets so I think its a function of volume. Low temp burn also increases the amount.

That's what I was saying above . I had to go watch the video for cleaning the Smoque. because I didn't know .
After you scrape the deflector , and take it out , that " Chute " for draining the grease comes out via a wing nut . Then the ash scrapes and sweeps through the hole and into the pan below .
It's slick . Weber has a good video on it , but I don't know how to embed it .

WARNING: ENABLER ALERT
I'm have not cooked with a pellet grill and have wondered about how it compares to a propane grill, which I currently have.
I "smoked" with my gasser and a tube and while it works it's no where is good as my Smokefire. There's a legit fire or "combustion" smell and flavor of stuff cooked on it. It walks all over the MES for "hot" smoked stuff like brisket/ribs/chicken. Holds temps WAAAY better than my old gas smoker. One thing I was blown away with when I got mine is how heavy it was. The MES is a paper weight compared to it and in my book heavier is better.

Looking at some other forums I understand that even with the high temperatures the searing is not all that great without a GrillGrate. It seems the recommendation for searing anything is the reverse sear method.

Cannot comment on other grills but the Smokefire does legit grill temps really well. That said, it will not compete with my gasser's sear burner (1500F) but otherwise it is on par otherwise. Totally nails the wood fired grill thing.

LOVE mine and wish I had it a LONG time ago.

Ah, I am properly educated.... I think I would just vac it, but you don't need to, some cheap paint progress brushes would do it. quick. I think I would invest in the foil liner things though.....

If you got the money, they got this but I think it's pretty new so not sure about reviews.

Same here. Love my Rt700.

OK.......I'm impressed with the Weber Searwood XL 600. It's quite a unit. The various video's on the BBQGuys website provide a lot of good information on the product, use of the product, and maintenance of the product (scroll down).

Hey All,

I wanted to see budget friendly pellet smokers that are decent. Any recommendations? My budget is around $600-700 tops.
I have been running a GMG for about 7 years now, only thing I have "fixed" has been igniters. I have the Jim Bowie Prime, which would be out of your price range, but the smaller Daniel Boon sounds like it would fit your budget with your discount. They do have good customer service as well - first time an igniter went out I called them to order one and they noticed it was still under warranty and just sent me one for free.

A buddy if mine got a XL600 a month or so ago and absolutely loves it. His OK Joe Rider DLX was having just too may problems finally, I am in the same boat as well just limping mine along the last couple years.
In his case versatility and ease of use is a big deal. It is a chunk of change for sure but eith father's day coming I might have to watch for a deal

You'll never go wrong with Ace ,, but I've done business with Acme tools for shop equipment and tools . Top notch company .
Sounds like the Ace Hardware that Scheels owns will be closing down in Fargo, that was their main BBQ store for the longest time I suppose now it will be there main store. Acme Tools I buy plenty of tools from in Fargo and for the most part no issues but the last time I took a Cub Cadet zero turn mower to have a drive belt replaced to them I left less than impressed so their service center doesn't get a very high rating from me.
