My daughter just turned 10. A few months ago she started showing interest in cooking. I love to cook and thought it would be a good way to spend some daddy/daughter time together. We started out by doing breakfast stuff - eggs, toast, bagels, etc. She has now become my smoking buddy. She loves hanging out in the garage smoking meat with me. Of course having a TV and Wii out there helps to keep her from getting bored.

She was almost as excited as I was when our new WSM got here right after Christmas.

Putting some Canadian Bacon on the smoker and taking it off.

Helping with some bacon wrapped tenderloin steaks.

If you have young kids, teaching them to cook and smoke is a great way to spend some quality time with them. Just thought I would share.

That straight up rocks buster! Good to have a young one interested in something that they will take with them the rest of their life. Keep up the great work and keep sharing your hobby with her. It won't be long and she'll be all grown up.

What a doll...my daughter turns 8 next month and sometime soon I will start including her in the weekend smoking fun. I agree it's a great way to share time together. Too bad my daughter is do darn picky that she may not always enjoy the fruits of our labors :-) Oh well, maybe that changes when she has a hand in cooking...

Thats great for you and her, they grow up so fast

Great post

Seems a lot of kids and parents don't get or make that kind of quality time .
Bravo to you and her for finding something to share with each other

Points for you

That's great! I know just how it feels. I taught my kids to grill and last summer my next door neighbors boy joined the Cub Scouts and had to do some cooking to get a badge so I started teaching him to help grill dogs and burgers and corn on the cob. After awhile he wanted to help in the preps too so I let him. He's made dump cakes all by himself and we cook it in the gasser.

This little guy is really getting into it now. He watches every cooking show that has anything to do with grilling or smoking on it. He's chomping at the the bits for spring to get here to have cookouts outside again. For some reason tho he's not that interested in cooking outside and taking it inside to eat. He wants to to do it all outside.

Maybe it's because we live in the country. Hmm. I don't know.

Enjoy the day.

That is awesome. Bravo to you. My 13 year old is only intreested in clothes and her cellphone, maybe my 3 year old will take to helping daddy. I wouldn't mind that bacon wrapped tenderloin steak recioe if you have time.

That's great! Hope my kids will show some interest when they get a little older...they both can't wait for dad's cooking as it is.

Darrin, that is great! I learned the same way...at my Dad's side.
Kudos to you and your daugher for an awesome smoke.

That's great. Maybe she will be the next Food Network star.

Both my kids(4&7) love to help in the kitchen and outside. My oldest makes my rubs. I hand him the ingredients and he puts them in the bowl and mixes. Then he will sprinkle the rub on the meat. So far his favorite dish to prep and eat was Halloween candy burritos. Flour tortillas with marshmallows and snickers. Wrapped them into burritos and grilled til melted. Like a Smore not nearly as messy. He also helps brew beer. He enjoys the science and watching fermentation.

That is good!!!! Both my daughters were about the same age when they got the smoke feeling, tried to keep them going as long as I could, but mother nature(boys) came a nockin............ and they were out of there. They are now 26 and 28 and at my house every weekend helping ole dad, even one of the son in-laws has gotten into smoking. Wouldn't have it any other way, best of luck to you. At the end of the day family is all you have.
