Outlaw style offset build

Little slow on getting work done. Mainly because I bought a lot of small 3/8” plates with some plasma holes cut in them that needed to be patched. Steel was in like new condition and I would weld 4 plates together, patch holes, cut to desired dimensions. Then repeat for all sides of firebox. All in all Ingot about 3/4 a sheet of 3/8” steel for $150 instead of $1k+ it would have been. Firebox is 90% 3/8” and 10% 1/4” where I patched with round bar. Inside smoothed best I could and dont care about outside as will be insulated. Going get 5x10 sheet of 1/8” tomorrow and insulation to finish FB

fb/cc opening is cut and I added in air damper that draws from bottom like outlaw. Sits 1.5” inside FB and 1” outside.Will be 1”insulation next to inlet and 2” everywhere else. Next is making frame for door and start fabbing pieces. Will be little more difficult since I am adding window to firebox

cC has been sanded smoothed and knicks, valve holes plugged. Will continue to work on it until in condition for cerakote finish. Ton of work left but ill keep chugging along

Don't omit air damper at the top of the FB.
You need air flow through the cooker that doesn't fuel the fire.

A lot of folks miss this, and yes it is important. Maybe not necessary, but makes the cooker work so much more efficient.

This offset wont have a damper high up on box. Ill adjust stack to get maximum draw so it wont be needed

Fab’d up door opening and got box insulated today. About 1 more day of work before done to seal up fb/cc opening and fabricate damper

Starting to design shelf,hinges, and handle mounts. What gauge stainless would be sufficient for these items. Place I get steel scraps from has various pieces 14-18 gauge available. Hinges will be three piece design with bolt or rivet thru pivot point

Same here but with cost of stainless I didnt really want to grab 1/8” thick pieces. Plus may not be avail in drops where I purchase. Hoping with rigidity a less thick piece would work

Havent posted in while so thought I would give update. I didn't like way it balanced previously so redid frame and extended so FB on top of rear wheel. Got door mounted but still need to fine tube fitting to tank. Damper installed in exhaust stack and false wall on inside complete. Got to point where I could test performance and am somewhat happy. Draws extremely well. So well hand over stack feels like a fan blowing all air out. Incredibly efficient. Half a split will maintain 250. Stack side runs about 25f hotter and think its due to my entry from FB being too high and wall is insulated. Going to cut it down so only few inches above grate level. Did make small mistake and installed tel tru a little too high but not terrible. All and all for first test I give it 8/10. Ill keep fiddling with it until its 9.9/10

may just leave it as raw finish and either clear coat or linseed oil. Not sure yet. Still need to figure out SS shelf and build grates. Will be using 1/2” round bar with 1/2” spacing

Update on build. Since I couldnt get FB side hot enough I removed vertical insulated wall and replaced with a 3/8” piece that was cut to sit 1/4-1/2” above grate level. Hoping this balances out temps. Also got handle mounted as well as damper handles. Built grates out of 1/2” round bar. Plan to test again Thursday and if all goes well will sand everything down to bate metal and prepare for copper and torch patina followed by clear coat.
Also got metal strips mounted on frame similar to outlaw

a test section of how patina will look. Copper under with blue and red over and various places. Strips above and below were taped off so you can see difference between bare metal
