Outdoor Prep Station !

    Been looking for an outdoor prep station , problem is for a $130 you can get a cheep plastic job or spend $400 plus. So I am improvising and went to Lowe's and bought a Kobalt powder coated steel storage cabinet for $190. has a big tor drawer 30" x 20' and a nice 2 door storage area underneath that holds 2 20lb charcoal bags and about 30lbs of wood. the top is has a 1/4" lip so I think I will top it off with a cutting board. Question what type of wood for a cutting board and what should I finish it with should ,  probably go on a wood working forum but am guessing someone here will know

    There is a store here the specializes in hard woods and they have already prepped butcher block tops that you can buy in varing sizes. They are finished and ready to go. That is where I would go.

    Hard maple will be perfect for your prep table.  Finish it with a couple of coats of butcher block oil(walnut oil).  

    Make sure it's thick because cuts from knives will have to be scraped flat or sanded.  Apply oil to the surface when needed.

    Food grade mineral oil is a good option. It's available at any pharmacy. I've been using on my wood cutting boards for many years.

    Your other option would be to find a plastic cutting board to use.  I was able to work though a glass and glazing company that could order 4'X12' sheet of the white plastic that they make cutting boards out of.  We made up a few custom boards 2 large ones that we use for butchering deer on.  It is works great.  I have a few, if we catch a bunch of fish we lay it between two saw horses and 4 people can clean fish around it.  Cleans up easy with soap and water and a spray down with hot bleach water.

    If it is going to live outside, I would shy away from a wood top. I'd like to know more about this cabinet as I need to replace my deck box/ charcoal bin/ wood chip holder POS plastic corner thingy

    It is going to be outside but I am using an old grill cover on it.38" high x 30"x wide x 20" deep.

    Get one of the plastic,they are easier to keep clean.If you prep Chicken on you can use a mild bleach solution,to sanitize it.

    Wood looks nice I have several of them, but over time they can delaminate and hold bad bacteria. If you are outside I would say go the plastic route. You can get them custom cut to size if needed.

    Thanks for the input , Going with Cedar I decided I really won't be prepping meat outside (113 degree's in AZ today ) just want to make it look nice !
