Tampa area, Florida.
OBR (operation bbq relief) is in need of volunteers to help with the feeding of 1st responders (and others) in the aftermath of Hurricane Micheal.. I am a registered volunteer with them and they sent me an email asking for help.... They will be deploying to both Panama City and Tallahassee...

Check out their web site (https://operationbbqrelief.org/) and see how BIG of an operation they have going... If interested just sign up with them and volunteer .. They really do an awesome job...

Here's the e-mail they sent me ..

You have received this email (as BCC recipient) because you are registered as a volunteer with Operation BBQ Relief and live in the state of FL, GA & AL.

Operation BBQ Relief will be deploying to feed those in need in the aftermath of hurricane Michael which made landfall today as a Category 4 hurricane.
This is a call for volunteers for our multi-pronged Florida deployment to both the Tallahassee and Panama City areas which is tentatively scheduled for 10/12-10/28 (subject to change). Please read it in its entirety.

If you are not available to assist on this deployment on any of those dates, then no reply is required. We understand that conflicts do occur and we appreciate even just the consideration.

We are beginning to stage equipment in preparation for deployment and are in need of volunteer sign-ups so that we can hit the ground running, fully-staffed, potentially as early as Friday, 10/12. The shifts are defined below. Volunteers are asked/expected to arrive by the start of their shift and to work the full shift so that we can plan accordingly for capacity needs.

Morning (AM) Shift: 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM local time
Afternoon (PM) Shift: 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM local time
All Day Shift: 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM local time

The exact site locations are not yet known because the hurricane is still in progress. We only know the general vicinity and will communicate the exact locations to deployed volunteers when we launch.

All volunteers onsite must be at least 18 years old, registered as a volunteer with OBR, and signed up to this deployment either via the OBR Volunteer app (preferably) or it can be done via the website.

***PLEASE DO NOT SELF-DEPLOY FOR ANY REASON. YOU WILL RECEIVE CONFIRMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU ARE DEPLOYED.***

If you ARE available to help (even for just one day), please follow the steps below so that your official deployment can be scheduled.

NOTE 1: Your official deployment notification will be sent approximately two to three days before your first scheduled date unless your first date is less than two days away then it will be sooner.

NOTE 2: If there is anyone coming with you they must also follow the steps below; each volunteer must be individually registered and logged.

Step One: Register as a volunteer with OBR. This is required to attend any OBR Deployments or Events. It only takes a minute. If you received this email then you are registered and can go directly to step 2.

There are three methods you may choose from (Please enter your registration data carefully and accurately or we will not be able to contact you).

  1. Preferred Method - Download the OBR Volunteer app to your smart phone using one of the following links (note using the app allows you to receive deployment push notifications):
    1. For Apple iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/obr-volunteers/id1193200138?mt=8
    2. For Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.operationbbqrelief.obrvolunteerapp
  2. Text OBR to 51555 and follow the link that is returned
  3. Register via the OBR website at https://operationbbqrelief.org/apis/volunteer/home/registration

Step Two: Sign up to to the specific deployment/event. ***There will be two deployment sites, Tallahassee and Panama City, FL. *** Please choose ONE site. This can be done through the app you downloaded (if you did) or via the website; follow these steps:

  1. Log into the OBR Volunteer app on your phone (preferred method; see links above) or via the OBR website
  2. Go to the active deployments
  3. Click "I'm Available" in the app (you may need to scroll down to see the button)
  4. Select all dates on which you can deploy (you may need to scroll down)
  5. Click "Apply" (you may need to scroll down to see the button)
That is it! You are then both registered in our database (this is a one-time thing now so you won't do it next time) and you are volunteered for deployment. Then you just need to be patient with us as we work through the volunteer logistics. It might be a couple of days before you get a confirmation depending on how the timing on this plays out. But one way or another you will receive a response.

As stated above, depending on when you first deployment date is you will receive an official deployment notification. It is very important that you do NOT self-deploy.

Please also consider sharing this email with your family and friends in case they are also available.

Additional Asks

1) Large Capacity Cookers: If you have a large capacity smoker (can take at least 50 pork butts minimum) that is propane fired and you'd be willing to bring it for use please send email to [email protected] and specify the type, capacity, and which deployment location.

2) Camp Chef: We are looking for folks that have self contained catering rigs and/or mobile kitchens who can deploy for at least three (but preferably five or more) days to function as a camp chef onsite to feed onsite volunteers. This is a critical role onsite to keep the operation running smoothly. All food and cooking costs will be covered by OBR but the role itself is a volunteer position. If you have that rig and time, please send email to [email protected] with details on your rig, which location, and all available dates. The longer you can be there, the better to minimize turnover mid-deployment..

Thank you in advance for your consideration!
Regards,
OBR Volunteer Mgmt

sounds like a great opportunity to serve. I work for an electric coop and we’re still dealing with flooding from hurricane Florence so no way I can go but I’m curious about the logistics. Are volunteers on their own for accommodations?
