My smoked turducken for Thanksgiving has been vetoed by the house appropriations committee. Ok, I can live with that. Anybody know how long it takes to boil a 13lb turkey? I'm thinking I'll just put it in still frozen and let it go all night. Something tells me next year those who don't cook will keep their mouths shut and let those who do cook make the meal they've been planning on making.
Now I'm off to look for a boiled pumpkin pie recipe...

LMFAO.....Dude, full speed ahead on the boiled buzzard. I've often considered a big bucket of KFC and plopping that on the table. I've been informed a small Thanksgiving Dinner is now happening here due to the usual internal frictions of a certain few on the other side. So, guess who's doing the cooking?? I've been informed a traditional roasted bird is in order with soggy dressing...nothing smoked. Sighhhhhh....at least I'll be cooking semi-sloshed ala Julia Childs in my own flop and can have the game on the 60"

With markets starting their turkey sale pricing, I'm up to 3 in the freezer already.  Maybe you can pick up a couple of extra birds and experiment after Thanksgiving?

Dang. That's a tough one. I have pretty strict rules in my house about such things. First - kids don't get a say. Get a job, then you get a say. I'm paying for all the food, cooking all the food, doing 80% of the cleaning after you all leave. SHUT UP WE ARE HAVING SMOKED TURDUCKEN.

LOL! Kidding. Not really.

Just make your own food and take a full plate with ya to the table.

I FEEL YA!! Good news is I too get to cook at home with the game on, and I will be following Julia's mantra: "I love cooking with wine, sometimes I even put some in the food!"
Better news is there has been talk of compromise by the opposition. Apparently it was the $50 fresh duck I was eying that raised the red flags. I've agreed, since the turkey is on the smallish side anyway, to just use the breast, a couple duck breasts and a chicken breast and do a "turduckenette". I'm thinking I'll give the turkey leg quarters the "Disney" treatment, IE cured and smoked carnival style, and do the rest in a completely boneless roll. Smoked as well.
In all fairness to my beautiful wife, she did relent and allow me to veto going to the "bad relatives" on her side of the family for Thanksgiving, so I cant bitch too loudly.

And here I thought I was the only one who dealt with holiday fun like this. I already have 2 breasts to smoke. Yesterday the wife says she wants a fried turkey because she doesn't like the smoked turkey and there weren't enough leftovers last year at her mom's . This morning my mom, who hasn't had Thanksgiving at her house in years, calls me and tells me she decided to have a meal and I need to be at her house for 1pm lunch. The wife's family eats at 5pm sharp every year and being late or absent is not allowable there. So I basically am going cook an entire meal, put it in the fridge, go to my mom's, come back home, pick up the dog and the wife (she works thanksgiving day) and go to her mom's to eat again. It'll be a busy 8 hours.

Try to remember it's about being with loved ones.

I once was told that I wouldn't be allowed to deep fry a turkey it had to be baked. It was a 12 LB bird. So I put it in the oven for 41 minutes then onto the serving platter. You should have heard it. My response was that is all of the time it takes to fry a turkey and that is all of the time I am going to waste on a baked turkey. That was almost the last time I was told without a doubt how I would be cooking something. For Christmas that year everyone raved about how good the fried turkey was. Most of the people were still talking about it the next year.

Happy smoken.

Stan maybe if you go out and sit and sob in your new smoke shelter you'll get a reprieve and be allowed to go shopping! Might help if you mumble to yourself and pretend to be spritzing things in your cold empty smoker at the same time!

Yep, boiled turkey is in order. I think your plan sounds perfect except you might want to dump in a couple of cups of salt and a bottle of Frank's. You wouldn't want to serve a bland turkey.

I guess I'm lucky, everyone always expects a smoked turkey.  One instance come to mind many years ago, when my wife sister, rude brother-in-law and kids were down for a visit. When we served dinner, (rude B-I-L said) "I don't like this" which I quickly responded, " You know you are a rude SOB, you got a car in the drive and restaurants down the road, go find you something you like. Needless to say they left the next day. We have eaten at family and friends house, where I didn't particularly care for what they fixed, But was polite, ate some and thanked them for inviting us.

Now in saying all that, I've been married for over 40 years and have learned to do what the boss says.

Exactly, there's never a need to be rude no matter how bad things taste. I always look at it this way, I can choke down a little bit of pretty much anything. Then I politely ask where the beer is and help myself to enough to wash the bad taste out of my mouth.

I guess I'm blessed my MIL and my mom are excellent cooks. Although they are on opposite ends of the food spectrum. My mom and step dad are health nuts so it's always no salt, no butter, low carb, low fat for whatever they cook, but they always make good food. My MIL is the exact opposite. Everything has butter in it, there's always a cup of bacon grease nearby to add to whatever she's cooking, and she loves to bake.

I fall somewhere in the middle. I eat healthy during the week, but the weekends are almost always for something fatty cooked on the smoker.

My FIL and I are the only "big drinkers" in the family so pretty much every get together involves us getting pretty tuned up and solving, or more likely creating, all of the family's problems. Most nights end with the wife and/or MIL pissed off at a one or both of us Usually they end up driving one or both of us home too.... Good times!

The SIL's new boyfriend is quickly becoming a member of the drinking crew. I knew when he texted me this week and asked, "are we having a few on Thanksgiving Eve" (code for should bring a case when I head to the house) he was going to fit right in...

I have so enjoyed reading this thread. You guys are a hoot. While being single does get lonely sometimes, I can joyfully say I cook whatever I want, when I want and invite who I want. It would be nice to have someone else to clean up my mess though. I swear, I clean up behind myself for the entire cook and I still end up with every dish in my house dirty. heavy sigh....

I wasn't even gonna cook a turkey, but I'm thinking I might smoke one after all. thanks to you guys.
