Well, to help answer your question, we need to know:

a) how much money do you want to spend on the project?

b) how many people do you want to be able to feed?

c) what fuel source are you wanting to use?

d) do you have room for an off set?

To many variables for a proper answer.

I don't really know that I need to spend money on it right now I will mostly use it when friends come over or when i do a event for my youth group or. The local fire department it may not be a big smoker but at least it's a start i want to learn i have no better way to do it then this way if it don't work out then i am ok with that i am making it out of a old water heater i have a friend helping me with building it he is a jack of all trades so if it needs metal work done on it i will be just fine with that

As Dutch said?

You have to ask yourself a lot of questions?

For fuel efficiency, uprights are the way to go.

For big cooks with ease of getting food on and off the grates.  Horizontals are hard to beat.

So many variables.

Think it through before you spend a bunch of money?

Good luck and good smoking.
