BeerBelly, FANTASTIC!

My dad died of cancer which originally showed up as cancer of the gum/jaw right where the cigarettes used to hang from his mouth.

I'm 58 and quit when I was 21, after 5 years of smoking 2 packs a day. Thats not long for some of you but my whole family were smokers. A commitment as a new Christian was my challenge to make the change. I did something to replace the bad habit with something better. Ok so I had a little extra help, but I also came up with this little help which if anyone tries it should work for them. To establish my commitment once I made the decision, I got rid of my smoking paraphanalia a brand new 2 day old Zippo lighter and 2 new cartons of Marlboros to a friend.
• I bought a folding toothbrush and a bunch of those little travel tooth paste tubes. I put the folding brush and a tooth paste in my shirt pocket. Every time I craved a cigarette I would go brush my teeth, especially my gums and tongue. There was several days I would be brushing my teeth every 5 minutes, like right after meals, or when I first got up. I can't rem. how long I did the brushing thing, but I knew after 60 days I had it beat. I had one relapse about 120 days when I went out drinking. Not a very Christian thing but I was young and still a bit wild and crazy.
• I had to quit all drinking, which I did for about 5 years. I never drink hard liquor except in egg nog. But I am a beer lover, and like a good glass of wine.

since it aint smoked--

good luck, it gets a little better/easier every day you go.

I quit my 18 year, daily habit of smokin o' the green when my daughter was born back on 2006, quit cold turkey, never been happier.

Good for you!

Like my wife tells people -- your lungs and other internal organs are grateful!

It's not easy quitting. You should be proud.

Keep up the good smokin -- meat!

I quit almost 8 years ago. Used the patch. I had smoked for 22 years, and it was tough. I still have the desire from time to time, but it ain't worth it, especially at over $5.00 a pack these days.

I used to smoke and decided I was quitting at the first of the year (about 10 years ago now). This was just to give myself a day to remember when I gave it up. I ended up not waiting 'til Jan 1 but quit Dec 25th. I took the half a pack I had and laid them on top of the fridge. I was showing myself that I was quitting smoking, not just out of cigs. I quit cold turkey. I still smoke cigars but just on occasion and I never inhale. I like the taste of the cigars but I smoke one a couple times a month.

Now we all seem to have a new addiction here smokin'. I mean you say "I quit cold turkey." I then think, cold turkey, hmmm....I would like to smoke another turkey. LOL

Congrats on quitting.

Congrats! tons of people say they'll quit but very few do it. Glad to see you stuck with it and lets hope many more years of being smoke free!

I told my wife (fiance at the time) that I'd quit on the anniversary of our first date, Feb 2, last year, I ran out of cigs on the 27th of Janurary, had my one in the morning, and haven't touched one since, just decided why wait. I started when I was 15 and quit several times before for a week or two at a time. Made it a couple of months once on the Smoke-Away thing, but I'm feeling really great. Congrats to every one of us "Ex-smokers".

I quit cold turkey myself about three years ago and it was tough for the first months, but after that I no longer had any cravings.

My wife tried to quit at the same time but only made it a few months, then a little over a year ago gave it another try and was able to kick the habit. Because she quit we were able to get pregnant and in October 2009 she gave birth to our daughter.

Thanks to Beerbelly for starting such a positive thread, and congrats on your 1st year anniversary!

Almost 20 years here. Quit cold turkey from five packs a day. I have been lucky and have never had a relapse. Oh and btw, I quit when they hit $1.00 a pack.

I will say good for you to everyone that quit and anyone else trying or wanting to.
