Hello to you all! Brand new member here from beautiful Ann Arbor, Michigan. I am 32 years young, and married 8 wonderful years to my beautiful wife. After several years of trying, we are expecting our first child in July. I am a graduate of the University of Michigan, class of '04 with a degree in engineering. I am currently employed by one of the "Big 3".

I am a huge sports fan and enjoy college football and MLB the most....Go Blue! I am the cook of the household, and love to grill.

Smoking meats is fairly new to me. I love BBQ, and enjoy many grilled meats. I recently started watching the BBQ Pit masters show on tv. The food they prepare on the show look absolutely fantastic. Being from the north, I never really had much in the way of smoked meats until my brother in-law moved to North Carolina and they had a whole pig smoked at their housewarming party. It was to die for. Upon my return to the great north, I immediately bought a smoker box for my gas grill (I know, I know), and was disappointed with the results on my ribs. They were dry, chewy, and had no smoke flavor whatsoever. Then winter came, and I have not grilled in 4 months. I started doing research about a month ago, looking into which smoker would be best for beginners. I finally went with the Masterbuilt 30. I just purchased it on Amazon, and is back ordered, so I hope to get it shipped soon. It's still too cold for me to go out and smoke, so I am not in a hurry at this point....but looking forward to my first smoke. I have spent a long time reading recipes, and tips on smoking. From what I can tell, it's really trial and error until you find a combo that works best.

I look forward to learning much more from the forum pros here. I will be sure to post my first smoke when it happens. For now, I plan on reading up on the forums....And I thank you for letting me be part of the wonderful world of smokin'

Welcome fellow Michigander! And for the record, it is not too cold to smoke! I started smoking just after Xmas 2012, and have a hard time going past a weekend without trying something new.
Feel free to send a note to any of us Michigan folks! I am not far from A2, and always willing to share smoking ideas!

Welcome from Canton, MI!

I am currently using an MES 30 with an AMPNS for smoke generation.

You should do okay with your Masterbuilt for your first smoke.  I like it much better than the el cheapo Brinkman I started off on.

Thank you all, and glad to meet some fellow Michiganders!

DJ, do you find you need a smoke generator to get a true smoke flavor with the MES, or do you prefer a heavier smoke flavor?

I used small wood chunks in it before i got the smoke generator. That worked out really well, but the AMPNS is great for cold smoking or long hot smokes. It was a learning process the first couple times.
