New to smoking

I recently acquired a Smokemaster horozontal smoker from a buddy who was moving and didn't have room to take it with him. It doesn't look like it has been used in a couple of years, maybe needs a little paint, but it looks like it is in pretty good shape. Any suggestions on cleaning it up and getting it ready to use would be greatly appreciated. I have been greatly impressed by the knowledge on this site

All I can offer is scrape that sucker down real good with a wire brush, sandblast even, and repaint it with grill paint. Then season it good before your first smoke. Welcome to the forum BTW!

What Seboke said. Clean up the inside as best you can, coat the inside, including the racks with veg. oil, pam or cooking oil of your choice and run it at about 300 deg. for about an hour and then bring it down to smoking temp. for about an hour and you should be good to go.

Welcome and I agree with all. Clean it up and season well with good wood or lump. Depending on how thin the metal is you may want to consider soda blasting instead of sand on the outside and then paint with high heat stove paint.

Looks like I've got my Saturday booked up, although I'm tempted to call in sick to work tomorrow to get a days jump on true smoking. After looking through all the forums, I can hardly wait to get started. My biggest problem will be deciding what to do first!!!

welcome to SMF-they have u covered as far as seasoning your new smoker-if u want it painted paint it-if u don't mind it looking well used than don't! I have a old dingy 1 that looks pretty bad-but when the people taste the foods from it-I just smile. good luck and have some fun!
