Hi all my name is rick I live in yucaipa ca which is socal . I wanted to get into smoking , I am a trucker and used to go back n forth to texas weekly and miss the bbq their. As we don't have to many bbq place where i live I decided this will be my new hobby. So was on a another form asking about what the best starter smoker after a few conversations I settled on getting a WSM not sure if i will get the 18 or 22. I think the 18 will be fine for me as it just me and the wife. we have a few pool parties in the summer with about 10 to 15 people but I want to cook ribs and have read the 18 is small for racks of ribs you have to cut them so I think the 22 will be better.

As i was telling a friend about my new adventure he said a home he remodeled had a old smoker just sitting their rusting it was small but if I wanted it he would drop it off. I will include pictures if I can. So he brought it over and it looks ok but it small and the inside has a lot off build up and flakes. So i want to clean it up and paint it. Was going to scrap it with a scraper and pressure wash it at the car wash but was told that might not be a good idea just scrap it and put a fire in the cook chamber and burn it out ? .

I dont think I can light a fire in the cook chamber as I don't think it has a lower grill to do this . I have 2 larger grills that fit in the cook chamber . And a smaller one I guess it goes in the fire box then there a smaller one which i have no idea where it goes unless it the lower grate for the cook chamber and its missing the other one . I also has 3 water / drip pans and a electric hot plate lol So i think the one grate goes in the fire box and nothing else and the cook chamber has the food grate . and i assume that the 2 drip/water pans just sit on the bottom of the cook grate but not sure any help would be nice. I would like to us this and experiment before I buy the WSM smoker.

On the wsm could you drill holes just below the grates and put a good thermometer so you have a good reading on your upper and lower cook grates
