New to Q ; help getting started

Howdy folks. My name is Greg and I'm from Southern NJ. I've always loved BBQ but you can't find anything good around my way. I remember enjoying famous Dave's as a kid but now I can't even look at that place without it making my stomach turn. I've done some BBQ research on a few website but a lot of the advice I've read contradicts each other. 

I'm looking for a low cost beginners setup that will help me learn how to properly tend a live fire and progress my skills so that one day I can invest in a larger setup. I was looking to buy an #18 Old Smokey to get started. Do you guys think this a good investment? I'm looking for any advice ya'll have to share. Thanks.

I purchased an Master Forge Electric smoker ( red one) from Lowe's, don't see It listed any more..

They also had a charcoal one( Green one), that was $59.00 I believe. If you have a Lowe's by you check them out.

Welcome to the SMF Family...When you say you want to tend a fire, you need to decide on Charcoal of Stick Burning. There are Vertical Smokers that do well with Charcoal as Dan pointed out. You may find A Horizontal Smoker with Side Fire Box better for Stick Burning but works equally well with Charcoal...Do some more research...JJ

To learn, start with an electric. Like an MES30. Or, a simple Weber Kettle grill will get you consistently good results.
