WASHINGTON – The Food and Drug Administration is in the process of a major recall of food products because of a common ingredient linked to Salmonella.

The ingredient is Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, otherwise known as HVP. It is used to make a variety of processed foods from tofu to potato chips to soup mix.

The contaminated HVP was supplied by Basic Food Flavors, Inc. in Las Vegas, Nevada. The FDA began investigating the plant after a customer reported finding Salmonella Tennessee in one production group. The FDA collected samples and confirmed the presence of Salmonella Tenessee.
