Start by posting a picture of your smoker and let's see that bad boy!!!
Like Jesse said, run it hot with plenty of smoke. Play around with your temperatures making sure you can control at different levels...don't overdo the smoke. Try to attain and maintain a thin blue smoke, which is what you want for smoking meats or anything else for that matter.
Then...go buy yourself a pork butt, or some ribs, or brisket and start smokin' man!!!!
