Well I finally broke down and bought a Weber Charcoal chimney. I have a cheap one I got from Wally World a year or so ago. I pretty much wore that rascal out. I will say this Weber unit is one NICE unit. It's made so much better than the old one.

Can't wait to use it.

They are awesome.I have become strict on keeping them out of rain and dry.Seems they last much longer............

The Weber chimneys definitely are a nice piece of equipment...as ALX said...keep it dry and it will last.

Only thing that makes them better is getting them on an "end of season" clearance for $11.....

They are the best way to start charcoal in my opinion, they make it so easy to have more ready to go when needed...

I do that with ALL my grills and gear! Except the Weber 22.5" kettle. Somehow, that thing (handles aside) has stayed close to intact after a full decade outdoors.

Weber makes some fine products for sure.

I've been using an old coffee can w/firestarter cubes.  Works fine for me, but ain't perfect.  Can't move the hot coals...just gotta start the coals in the spot you need them.

I do have an el-cheapo chimney that's been hanging in there for a bunch of years for me.

I heard that with a quarter full chimney at full heat with a grate on top you can sear tuna real nice, been waiting for tuna to go on sale to try.

A small, tabletop grill also works great. Keep your eyes peeled for some season end deals. I found a few at grocery store a few years back. Seems grocery stores have to really discount their seasonal stuff to make room (I picked up a gas tabletop grill at Krogers for <$10)

I saw that one a long time ago.  The other night I watched an episode I had DVR'd in which he cooked a porterhouse steak with a chimney starter.  Got the coals hot, then set the chimney ONTOP of the steak for 1 1/2 minutes, flipped the steak, set the chimney on top for another 1 1/2 minutes, then set a grill grate on top of the chimney, steak on the grill, and a metal bowl as a dome over the steak.

Looked interesting....I might give it a shot some time.

And ike everyone said -- Weber chimneys rock.  Well worth the money.

They hold A LOT more then the cheapo I bought.

This didn't work in my favor filling 75% of a chimney up to throw int he UDS. It ran hotter than ever. Guess I should just pay more attention to how much charcoal

More Alton tips... I've always started mine with a piece of newspaper or 2 wadded up and about half the time it would go out before it got the chimney started.  This weekend I used 2 paper towels and sprayed them lightly with olive oil (it's what's in the sprayer) and you could tell right from the start how much better it was going to be.  It light right up and kept on burning.
