I had been searching for an oval DO/roaster that mated with my Lodge Sportsman grill.
I've been wanting to do some DO charcoal cooks when/if the weather ever cools down in my neck of the woods.
So, I finally found a DO that I liked.
This Camp Chef 12Qt Oval DO arrived three weeks ago.
While it comes preseasoned, I went ahead and did 3 more seasonings over the course of a couple of days.

First cook was a whole chicken with veggies and red taters in the oven.
Even made gravy in the DO.
Sorry no pics of that one, but it sure was delicious!
Last week, our local Safeway had a good price on chuckies.
I picked up 3 chuckies along with another pork butt and another whole yardbird to keep the deep freezer happy.
So, last Sunday was chuck roast with yukon golds and veggies done low and slow at 275 in the oven.

Here's a few pics of the DO.

It even has a pobe port.

The DO mates perfectly with the Sportsman grill.

The lid can be used as a griddle.

The CI wok fits nicely on Sportsman too.

Quick shot of the oven chuckie...it sure was tender and delicious.

If anyone is intrested, I got it here: https://www.opticsplanet.com/camp-chef-12-qt-golden-spike-oval-roaster.html

It is on sale right now and includes fee shipping.

Thanks for looking

P.S. I am not affiliated with Camp Chef or Optics Planet in any way, shape, or form.

The more I look at it..The more I want one. Wonder if I could slip it past the wife under my shirt.
Jim

Jim,

My wife kind of rolled her eyes when I told I ordered it.
When she took her first bite of the roasted chicken, she said,
" OMG! Things just taste so much better when they're cooked in cast iron."

I think you can sneek one in. Just double over and say you've got a tummy ache.

I'll tell you though, this thing is still heavy when empty.

Thanks for the like too.

Stuart.

I'm wishing that I had a little more room in my kitchen, I'd get one.

Really like the shape, and the probe port.

I hear you.
We have limited space in our kitchen too.
Since our wine sever has an open bottom rack, that is where we store the DO and the wok.

The probe port is what did it for me.
The Bayou Classic version of this DO isn't as deep and lacks the probe port.

That's awesome . Love the shape .

Yup . I have all mine on a rack in the kitchen .

Thank you Rich.

Since the Sportsman grill grate is oval in shape, I wanted to stick with that.
And you guessed it, the body can be used as a makeshift smoker dome if desired.

The DO can easily fit two whole yardbirds plus taters and veggies too.

Dang , that's bigger than I thought .
My son has a regular enameled 8 quart . He does 40 clove garlic chicken in his . Uses thighs and legs . Man it's good . More like a stew .
I see a lot of advantage to the size and shape of that one you have .

Yeah, it is a 12 quart and can feed an army.

Just awesome! Now I want one so bad! Damn kitchen is just not big enough and winter is around the corner and No more cooking outside when it's minus 30 or better. Well.....there is the garage. Lol. I have several CI pots and pans and using them inside in the past sometimes set of the alarm. So it's outside or disconnect the darn alarm. Or...learn to use them right

I like that it fits on the sportsmen grill. I'd have a hard time passing that by the boss since I already have a DO. Nice review by the way

Steve,

Thank you for the compliment.
Yeah, my boss questioned it too since we have a round 6 Qt DO already.
She jokingly asked if I was prepping for the apocalypse. I told her it is still 2020, so anything is possible.

I just wish it wasn't still so dang hot, dry, and breezy down here since I really want to try a charcoal DO cook with the Sportsman grill. I don't have DO stand...yet.

Thanks!

Go for it!
Disconnect the the smoke alarm. Just be sure to reconnect it. :emoji_wink:

Seriously, using it in the oven didn't set off any of my smoke alarms.

BTW, from a lot of the online reviews, bread bakers love this DO esp for baking baguettes.
They use the lid as the bottom.

Nice piece ya added there, I too like how it fits the grill.

I already have a 12qt DO, but that oblong looks real nice for fitting multiple chucks or other large cuts of meat into.

Thank you!
It certainly fits the bill in that respect.

Nice and cool up here, having a nice fall. I'd be curious as to how long the grill can keep the DO cooking. I know once you get that grill heated up. It holds the temp very well. I'll wait for your review on that. If it sounds good then I might pull the trigger.

You're lucky.
Seems like we're stuck in a perpetual summer loop down here.

I know from using the grill for normal grilling duties that it retains heat very well and that heat should transfer very well to the DO.

So, I am curious as well.

Honestly, even if I didn't have the Sportsman grill, I would have pulled the trigger on the DO anyway since our current 6 Qt DO just doesn't hold much.

Stay tuned...maybe next month I will get the opportunity to start experimenting.

As for the grill itself, I love the thing.
It sure has been nice grilling with charcoal again after a 45 year hiatus.
The grill is perfect for two people.
Half a chimney of lump or briquettes with some wood chunks does the trick. :emoji_wink:
