Do I need to do any sort of seasoning to my new WSM? Doesn't seem I would need to looking at the shiny finish of the unit.

Also I notice in the book Weber states that lump charcoal is not recommended. I plan on using it, just wondering why they said not to.

Nah, just use it. I didn't do any seasoning with mine, I just fire it up and used it.

I use both lump and bricks in mine.

I dont think it need seasoning, but I think the WSM seems to stablize better after a few smokes.

Or that could have just been me learning how to use charcoal :D

+1 to the above posts.

take it out of the box, assemble, smoke..

From what I read, and experienced the WSM ran a little warm for the first couple times. Now after about 10 uses since x-mas it chugs away nice.

Not sure why the recommend against lump(never read the manual). I have used lump and Kingsford Comp. briquettes, both worked good, lump left alot less ash though. I prefer lump for some reason.

What those guys said. Huh, I've ever read the manual either. I've always used lump. Not sure what their rational would be for that.

good call, I belong over there, great info for WSM's

All I did was wipe/clean up the manufacturing oil/residue and lit it up, mine feeds on wood, same wood I feed my Horizon, just split a little more.
