what type of wood is this

hard to tell from that picture. can't see the bark very well but it looks like a birch but i could be way off. you got any better pictures?

Can you smoke with birch

yes but let someone confirm my guess. says to take bark off. wouldn't be the best for smoking

That's definitely birch. It fine to cook with. Probably best on pork or chicken as it tends to flavor like maple wood. The bark will give off some interesting colors when burned.
