I have a 10lb pork butt but I am against a time constraint. If I were to cut it into two 5 lb pieces and cook them at the same time, can I expect that they would be completed in a 5 lb time?
i am using a Traegergrill Thant has plenty of room in it.

I am not usually into manipulating cook times as I enjoy long cooks but this is a special occasion.

Yes, cutting a 10 lb butt in half will be the same as smoking/cooking a 5 lb butt, roughly. Allow proper air circulation between them.

I do the opposite quite often and smoke two 10 lb butts. Takes as long as one 10 lb butt.

agreed with Winterrider Winterrider run it hotter if you are tight on time. they turn out great. I do most of mine at 275, but as above show 300.

Cook times with barbecue meats are not exactly proportional. For example my cook times for a 10# butt could be 14 to 17 hours, but cutting it in half may only reduce to the cook time to 9 to 11 hours. On the other end of the equation, let's use a standard rule of thumb of 1.5 hours per pound. If I had a 2# money muscle roast (aka coppa roast), it won't be done in 3 hours.

I just had a 3 lb chuck throw me a curve ball with 9 hours at 225 and a wrap. Sometimes the math just needs tossed out the window.....

Welcome to SMF T-2. Cut it in half, and start earlier to give yourself plenty of time to get it done right. Once it's done you can wrap in foil or paper and towel wrap in a ice chest for hours. RAY

Just remember the higher temp you run your pellet rig the less smoke you will get. always run lownslow starting out for a hour or 2 then kick the temp up
