Please recommend a good vertical meat smoker for under 400.00. Master built ain't worth a crap and neither is pit boss. The average man should be able to purchase a meat smoker to use 15 to 20 times a year and not cost him an arm or a leg. I live in Norfolk Va and can't travel more than a hundred miles. Please help if you can . Thank you.

Pit Barrel Cooker would be my choice at $299 from Amazon, just as close as your computer! On Amazon! $299.00

A barrel cooker is the way to go for your scope and price range. They work great too. Many pit masters use them in competitions.

Like Pops said- the PBC is quite an awesome piece of equipment. You could also go for an 18in Weber Smokey Mountain in that price range.

Also, you could likely find a used WSM 22" for that price. The WSM is a solid performer.

Is building something out of the question? You could build a very very nice UDS in that price range.

You can bring some meat thermometers out of a drum smoker but otherwise you're pretty much cooking blind with them. I love my cheap masterbuilt vertical cabinet charcoal smoker (half price at Walmart for $50) but I agree it's a little flimsy. But it has doors to tend both your meat and your fire with it--very forgiving. Can't anyone recommend something like that but with a higher build quality that Deadon will like?

If a guy says Fords and Chevies aren't good enough for him, you steer him to a Mercedes or Cadillac, not to kit cars!

I had a pit barrel cooker and sold it. Felt too limited. I got a 22" WSM and i'm much happier with that. I went with the larger model as I want to fit a full packer brisket.

Maybe Deadon, the original poster, can tell us more what he's looking for. He doesn't like Masterbuilt or PitBoss but not sure if it was the features of those units (e.g. he was looking at just pellet grills) or the build quality. Not sure of his price range either.
