My new fridge build!

Discussion in 'Fridge/Freezer Builds' started by pappapig, Sep 21, 2014.

  1. Hey guys, decided to jump into the fridge smoker world. My fridge should be here Monday or Tuesday, it's an old GE with enameled interior. I'll be doing a pid setup and using an AMNPS for my smoke generator. I have four kids so bear with me if the progress is slow at times. I already have my controller, SSR, power supply, and heating element. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Peppapig , hello and keep us posted on this build . Looks interesting and curious as to the efficiency .

Have fun , let the kids join in , their imaginative ideas may lead to genius . . . never underestimate the power of a child's mind . .

Besides , it's your leadership that forms their values . Sorry , I'm a G-Paw and get to rambling about my favorite people...

    Enjoy your build and  . . .
  3. Well I still haven't got my fridge, can't seem to get time. However I was able to salvage a control box and more goodies off of a older bakery oven that is getting scrapped.
  4. Did a test run on all my components and PID wiring today. Everything worked on the first shot thankfully. Just need to add an on/off switch and a breaker and it's all set for installation.

  5. Yay! Picked up the fridge today. It's a Fridgidaire by GM, not a GE like I thought, but that's ok. The door is a little stuck so I'll take pictures of that later. Overall in decent shape.
  6. Forgot my picture!

sweet, that will make a wicked smoker
  8. Well I just scared the crap out of myself. Cut a refrigerant line while cutting a rusted bolt. Thankfully it's Freon.
  9. My newer smaller heating element I'll be using. 208v 4675 watt but I'll be running on 120v which should give me a little over 1500 watts. [IMG][IMG]
  10. Can anyone say for sure that this is rock wool insulation?[IMG][IMG][IMG]

looks like it is, but really doesn't matter what it is. Rip it all out and start new. buy Roxul insulation and put that in. 1 bag of the r16 or r20 for 2x4 interior walls is more than youll need, often find some on craigslist or kijiji that someone ha left over from a project. Pink insulation can be used, but the Roxul is the best

its old insulation and may have had moisture in it at one time. Have heard some guys say that it may look fine but can stink once it starts to warm up when running the smoker
  12. Thats what i was thinking. I was wanting to go new haven't found any left overs and new is $55 around here. Thanks for the input.

  14. Thanks, I actually read your whole build before I even got my fridge! I think I'm going to take my chances and leave the insulation, if I can do that then I'll still have no money so far in this build. Ive exchanged work and bartered for everything so far. The only main thing I'll be doing different is using an AMNPS. for a smoke generator.

I have about the same fridge, rock wool and Porcelin walls, I left every thing as is, made some draft holes at the bottom and chimney out the top, been working great for me for about 4-5yrs now I think.

Good luck and let us know your progress

A full smoker is a happy smoker

  16. Whatbdoes everyone think about the industrial look? I kinda like the patina look and my control box has that industrial look with louvers and all. Thought about leaving the finish alone instead of painting it.
  17. Mounted my control box and did my controller wiring. Just have to finish up a couple things in the box. [IMG][IMG][IMG]
  18. Sorry for the slow progress. Been extremely busy with work lately. Got the compressor and condenser cut out and the cabinet liner removed. Next I'm starting on my frame and wheels and designing the smoke system. [IMG]
  19. I'm in   This will be neat !!!

  20. Sorry for the long wait between posts. Should be quicker now. Got my frame built and casters on today.[IMG]
