So I have been in the Philippines for about 4 months now, and ever since I got here I have been looking for a fabricator to make me a smoker. But, since I am in a place where no one knows about smoked bbq, I had to find someone with balls enough to try something new to them. Finally though, after 2 guys who decided they didn't want a part of it, I found the perfect guy, and he happens to be friends with my lady and lives down the street. Go figure.

The smoker will be an 82 gal 15 gauge water tank converted, with a fire box sharing the same 15 gauge steel made to be 1/3 the size of the smoker. The frame I am pretty sure is made with 3/16th steel corner bars. I will edit later if needed.

He started construction on it today and I have to say, I am stoaked. Its already coming together. The hard part will be getting the cooking grate since they dont have stuff like that here. but other than that, it seems to be going smoothly.

I will keep updates day to day and let you all know the progressssssss...

Very nice! I just searched a bit and am very surprised to see the # of people that frequent or live in the PI!!

I was born in the US but both my parents were born in the PI and I'm still yet to make my first trip over. Glad to know there are a good # of like minded bbq/smokers over there!

Looking forward to the progress of your smoker! Looking good so far!

so its been a few days since I posted and the smoker is almost finished. I didn't realize that it would be so hard to find simple things that we have back in the states. it was a challenge finding the right size grill grate, wheels, and man is it hard to find a bbq thermometer. but like I said, we are almost finished and that much closer to some good old fashioned American smoked BBQ.

Here are a few photos from the last few days of progression.

Oh for the love of everything Holy!

    Not protection whatsoever!
Looks like he just squints his eyes while he welds.
And why bother covering your skin?

Guess they do not have the equivalent of OSHA over there.

Nice looking build... How in the world are you able to tolerate not having a hood to protect your eyes. I got a headache just thinking about it! Keep the photo rolling.

I saw a hand full  of others on this site as well who are here. one guy does bacon and has it as a business I guess. I am hoping that its a hit here doing pork, brisket, and even some homemade smoked mozzarella if I can get my hands on some rennet. I guess something like that would have to be an online purchase here considering not many real good cheeses here other than imports. let alone fresh cheeses.

From what I have gathered, nothing about this is right,, from welding without a hood all the way to galvanized. Somethings just not right here.

Using galvanized for the firebox is DANGEROUS.

    Stop now.

the no hood thing is his preference. As For the galvanized, Whats the Problem? What will happen?

  17. Is that guy welding on galvanized? That could kill you.

I just realized that. the worst part, I just spent a week having him build it. Is there anyway to salvage it?

maybe change out the Fire box to stainless? Considering I usually don't go over 250 with most smokes. the smoking chamber should be ok right?

or burn it with Muriatic acid?
