I would say a shelf IS a necessity, especially if you use a probe thermo when cooking
 
I dig it, dude! I like the lid idea, though you might think about keyhole slotting either the lid or the hinge for easy removal. On a windy day, you are going to have yourself an effective wing on your hands......or rather, on the ground.

thanks all for the nice comments. that hinge thing was a BEAR to get just right , not being real mechanical or that good of an engineer( as a locksmith , I know locks , safes , etc. , but most other stuff gives me a hard time !! ) It helps when it is fun to do.
