Hello everyone! I'm a newbie and am starting out with a 30in Masterbuilt Electric Smoker. I have had pretty good luck with it so far but am already wanting to buy a bigger, nicer smoker with a window so I can watch the magic happen! Being from Kansas City you would think that it would be easy to find folks who can answer my questions but, so far, I haven't run across any other folks from KC on the forum.
A little about myself. I am a 48 year old retired government employee. I am the proud father of 3 beautiful daughters and I also have an absolutely adorable grand daughter that I keep several days a week while her mama starts her new nursing career. My lovely bride of 15 years works for a local company and the 2 daughters still in the home keep us very busy with volleyball, b-ball, softball games and practices.
I have a fairly rare medical condition that requires me to eat large amounts of protein on a daily basis so my smoker and grill both see quite a bit of action. I'm learning a lot but I know I still have a lot to learn! Any and all advice will be very much appreciated.
I do have a couple of questions that I think are unique to my electric smoker...
1. Can I use pellets in the wood chip box? I have been told that they smoke at a lower temp and my smoker doesn't really produce much smoke unless the temp is set at 125 or higher.
2. Has anyone else had problems with the electric plug that goes into the heating unit getting dirty and losing a good electrical connection while the smoker is in action?.Is there any reason i couldn't fashion some sort of shield to keep meat juices from dripping onto the plug?
Thanks in advance for your input and your advice!
